In Shanghai, Chiang Kai-shek’s forces and allied groups attacked and arrested Communists and left-leaning labor organizers. The crackdown helped end the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party)–Chinese Communist Party alliance and set the stage for rival governments and a widening civil conflict. It was a key political break that made a new, more centralized Nanjing-based government possible.
The Kuomintang formed a rival national government in Nanjing, asserting it as China’s capital while competing factions still existed elsewhere. This marked the political starting point of what is often called the “Nanjing Decade,” when the Nationalists tried to build stronger central institutions after years of warlord fragmentation. The new government became closely tied to Chiang Kai-shek’s leadership and the National Revolutionary Army.
A dispute in Jinan between National Revolutionary Army forces and Japanese troops and civilians escalated into days of fighting. The incident deepened Chinese public anger toward Japan and highlighted how foreign military forces inside China could derail Nationalist unification efforts. Japan’s occupation of the city afterward also showed the limits of Nationalist control on the ground.
A bomb destroyed the train of Manchurian leader Zhang Zuolin near Shenyang, killing him. The assassination, carried out by officers of Japan’s Kwantung Army, was intended to reshape politics in Northeast China but instead increased instability and anti-Japanese feeling. It also helped set up the later political shift in Manchuria under Zhang Zuolin’s son, Zhang Xueliang.
Zhang Xueliang announced that Manchuria would recognize the Nationalist government and replace the old Beiyang-era flags with the Nationalist flag. This decision is commonly treated as the political endpoint of the Northern Expedition and a milestone in “nominal” national unification under Nanjing. In practice, many regional armies still kept significant autonomy.
A large civil war broke out between Chiang Kai-shek’s central government and a coalition of powerful regional commanders who had been former allies. Although the Nationalist government ultimately won, the conflict consumed resources and damaged efforts to build stable national institutions. The war also left the government more dependent on military force and personal alliances.
The Nationalist government launched a major offensive to destroy the Communist base area in Jiangxi, often called the Jiangxi Soviet. The Communists survived and counterattacked, showing that the civil war was becoming a long, organized struggle rather than scattered uprisings. These campaigns tied down Nationalist troops even as external threats grew.
Japanese officers staged an explosion near the South Manchurian Railway and used it as a pretext to occupy Mukden (Shenyang). The incident quickly expanded into Japan’s takeover of Manchuria and the creation of the puppet state Manchukuo. For the Nanjing government, it was a major turning point: foreign invasion now competed directly with the ongoing civil war for attention and resources.
Communist leaders proclaimed the Chinese Soviet Republic in Ruijin, Jiangxi, creating a competing political structure to the Nanjing government. This declaration signaled that the Communist movement aimed not only to fight but to govern territory. It intensified the Nationalist government’s determination to eliminate Communist base areas through repeated campaigns.
Under heavy Nationalist military pressure, the main Communist forces broke out of their base area and began a long retreat that became known as the Long March. The movement was both a military escape and a political turning point, eventually shifting the Communist center of gravity toward northwest China. The Nationalist government’s counterinsurgency campaign succeeded in capturing territory, but it did not destroy the Communist leadership.
Two Nationalist generals detained Chiang Kai-shek in Xi’an to pressure him to reduce the civil war with the Communists and focus on resisting Japan. Negotiations led to Chiang’s release and helped create conditions for a renewed Nationalist–Communist cooperation against Japanese expansion. The incident showed how the Japanese threat was reshaping Chinese politics during the late Nanjing Decade.
A clash near the Marco Polo Bridge outside Beiping (Beijing) escalated rapidly into wider fighting between Chinese and Japanese forces. This is widely treated as the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War, which overwhelmed the political priorities of the Nanjing government. The Nanjing Decade’s state-building agenda effectively ended as China shifted into national wartime mobilization and emergency governance.
