Xi’an Incident forces anti-Japanese United Front
Labels: Chiang Kai-shek, Xi'an Incident, Second UnitedOn December 12, 1936, Chiang Kai-shek was seized in Xi’an by two of his own generals who demanded that he stop prioritizing the civil war and focus on resisting Japan. Negotiations ended with Chiang’s release and helped bring the Nationalists (KMT) and Communists (CCP) into a new cooperation called the Second United Front. This political shift set the stage for China’s wartime mobilization after open fighting with Japan began in 1937.
