Portuguese land at Tanegashima, introducing firearms
Labels: Tanegashima, Portuguese sailors, Matchlock gunIn 1543, Portuguese sailors arrived at Tanegashima after being blown off course, creating one of Japan’s first direct contacts with Europeans. Japanese leaders quickly recognized the value of the matchlock firearm (often called the tanegashima gun) and began copying it locally. This early encounter helped link foreign trade to military technology during Japan’s era of civil wars.
