In 1543, Portuguese sailors arrived at Tanegashima after being blown off course, creating one of Japan’s first direct contacts with Europeans. Japanese leaders quickly recognized the value of the matchlock firearm (often called the tanegashima gun) and began copying it locally. This early encounter helped link foreign trade to military technology during Japan’s era of civil wars.
In 1549, Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier arrived in Kagoshima and began organized Christian evangelization in Japan. Christianity spread fastest in parts of Kyushu where some local lords saw ties with Portuguese traders as economically useful. Religion and commerce became closely connected in the Nanban (“southern barbarian”) contact period.
In 1557, Macau developed into a key Portuguese base in East Asia and became an important center for ships traveling between China and Japan. This made overseas trade more regular and profitable, especially for Japanese ports that welcomed foreign ships. The growing trade network also increased the flow of foreign goods, silver, and information into Japan.
Around 1570–1571, the Christian daimyō Ōmura Sumitada supported the growth of Nagasaki as a port serving Portuguese shipping. Nagasaki’s rise shifted foreign trade toward tighter, port-based control rather than scattered coastal contacts. Over time, it became Japan’s most important gateway for regulated foreign commerce.
On July 24, 1587, Toyotomi Hideyoshi issued the Bateren Edict, ordering Christian missionaries to leave while still allowing trade to continue. The edict shows how leaders tried to separate economic benefits from religious influence. It also signaled that tolerance for foreign-linked religions could change quickly as Japan moved toward political unification.
On February 5, 1597, twenty-six Christians were executed in Nagasaki in a highly visible act meant to deter Christian growth. This event became a turning point, showing that the central government was willing to use harsh punishment against foreign-linked religious networks. It foreshadowed much broader anti-Christian policies under the Tokugawa shogunate.
In 1609, the Dutch East India Company established a trading base at Hirado, expanding European competition in Japanese waters. The Dutch generally focused on trade rather than missionary work, which later helped them remain in Japan when other Europeans were expelled. Hirado became an early testing ground for how Japan could permit commerce while limiting political and religious risk.
In 1614, Tokugawa authorities formally banned Christianity and ordered missionaries expelled. The policy reflected fear that foreign religion could undermine loyalty and social order, especially in regions with many converts. This marked a shift from selective tolerance toward systematic suppression of Christian practice.
In 1624, the Tokugawa government expelled Spaniards and cut official ties with Spain. This step reduced the number of European powers operating in Japan and reflected continued anxiety about Catholic missionary activity. Japan was narrowing foreign access to make control easier and reduce perceived security threats.
In 1635, Tokugawa Iemitsu banned Japanese people from traveling overseas and barred many from returning if they had already left. These rules aimed to reduce the spread of Christianity and limit uncontrolled contact with foreign powers. They became a core part of sakoku, Japan’s system of tightly managed foreign relations.
In 1636, the shogunate built Dejima, a fan-shaped artificial island in Nagasaki Bay, to restrict and monitor foreign residents and trade. The design physically separated foreigners from the wider population and made surveillance easier. This was an important step toward an isolation system based on controlled entry points rather than complete cut-off.
From 1637 to 1638, a major uprising in Shimabara and Amakusa involved many heavily taxed peasants, including Christians facing persecution. The shogunate crushed the rebellion and then intensified measures to eliminate Christianity, including stricter policing and registration systems. The revolt strengthened the government’s belief that foreign religion could fuel instability.
In 1639, Portuguese ships were forbidden to trade with or visit Japan, completing a key stage of sakoku. In 1641, the Dutch trading post was moved from Hirado to Dejima, where trade continued under strict supervision. Japan did not “close” completely; it reorganized contact into a narrow, state-controlled channel centered on Nagasaki.
In 1808, the British warship HMS Phaeton entered Nagasaki harbor disguised under a Dutch flag and seized Dutch representatives as hostages to demand supplies. The incident revealed serious gaps in Japan’s ability to defend even its most controlled foreign-contact port. It contributed to later debates about strengthening coastal security while maintaining restrictions.
On July 8, 1853, U.S. Commodore Matthew C. Perry arrived at Uraga near Edo (Tokyo) Bay with steam-powered warships and demanded a new relationship. The shogunate faced direct pressure backed by military force and modern technology. Perry’s arrival made it difficult to keep foreign contact limited to Nagasaki alone.
On March 31, 1854, Japan and the United States signed the Treaty (Convention) of Kanagawa, opening Shimoda and Hakodate to U.S. ships for supplies and allowing a U.S. consul. The agreement is widely treated as the key endpoint of Japan’s seclusion system (1639–1854). It triggered a broader chain of treaties and helped move Japan into a new phase of foreign relations.
