After decades of Jōdo Shinshū–aligned leagues (Ikkō-ikki) exercising local power in Kaga Province, Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s campaign brought the Kaga Ikkō-ikki polity to an end. This marked the final suppression of one of the most durable religiously organized popular uprisings of the Sengoku era, helping clear the way for nationwide unification and stricter control over armed religious institutions.
A bribery-and-forgery conspiracy involving Christian daimyō Arima Harunobu and a Tokugawa retainer (Okamoto Daihachi) was exposed. The episode intensified Tokugawa distrust of Christian subjects and is commonly cited as a contributor to the shogunate’s increasingly repressive anti-Christian posture in the following years.
Tokugawa Ieyasu issued an edict banning Christianity and ordering the expulsion of missionaries. The policy helped set conditions for later religious resistance, including Christian-linked rural unrest in Kyūshū, by criminalizing worship and tying local governance to anti-Christian enforcement.
Rebel forces attempted to take Shimabara Castle but failed to storm the defenses. After roughly three weeks, the prospect of major shogunate reinforcements forced the rebels to abandon the siege and shift their operations southward.
The Shimabara Rebellion began amid rural hardship and religious persecution when rebels assassinated a local magistrate, triggering broader mobilization across Shimabara and the Amakusa Islands. The revolt quickly drew in impoverished peasants, local Christians, and rōnin, becoming the most consequential popular uprising of early Tokugawa rule.
On Amakusa, rebel forces won a notable early victory at Hondo Castle. The defeat undermined local domain defenses and contributed to a rapid escalation of the conflict beyond Shimabara, reinforcing the rebellion’s regional character.
Rebels attacked Tomioka Castle in Amakusa but were repulsed after several days. The failure limited rebel control over Amakusa’s strongpoints and helped push the movement toward consolidation at a single defensible position.
Rebel forces fortified themselves at the abandoned Hara Castle site, where a large Tokugawa-led coalition army commenced a protracted siege. This became the decisive military engagement of the rebellion and a focal point for shogunate resolve to eradicate armed resistance tied to Christianity.
Following the collapse of the rebel defense at Hara Castle, rebel leader Amakusa Shirō was killed/executed. His death symbolized the defeat of the uprising and became a lasting reference point in the history of Christian persecution and popular revolt in early Edo Japan.
Organized resistance in Shimabara and Amakusa was extinguished by mid-April 1638. The shogunate’s victory was followed by harsher enforcement of religious controls and tighter surveillance of rural society, shaping later patterns of (mostly non-armed) peasant protest under Tokugawa governance.
In the wake of the Shimabara uprising and ongoing anti-Christian policy, the Tokugawa shogunate completed a key step in the sakoku system by forbidding Portuguese ships from trading with or visiting Japan. The measure reflected the regime’s determination to cut perceived conduits of Christian influence and foreign intervention.
Later Edo-period peasant actions increasingly took the form of petitions, desertion, and collective protest rather than sustained armed rebellion. Modern reference works commonly frame the Shimabara-Amakusa conflict (1637–1638) as a turning point after which large-scale armed rural uprisings became far rarer under Tokugawa consolidation.
