Oda Nobunaga’s upset victory over Imagawa Yoshimoto helped shift the balance of power in central Japan. This win mattered because it opened the path for Nobunaga’s later expansion, which created the political and military setting in which Toyotomi Hideyoshi would rise.
After the Honno-ji crisis began to reshape leadership, Hideyoshi initiated land surveys that later became known as the Taikō kenchi (Taikō land survey). These surveys measured farmland and assessed its productive value, supporting more consistent taxation and tighter central control over villages and lords.
Akechi Mitsuhide attacked Nobunaga at Honnō-ji in Kyoto, leading to Nobunaga’s death. The event triggered a sudden struggle for succession among Nobunaga’s leading generals, giving Hideyoshi an opening to move quickly for supremacy.
Hideyoshi defeated Shibata Katsuie’s forces at Shizugatake, removing a major rival faction within the former Oda coalition. The victory helped Hideyoshi position himself as the leading power broker and military leader in central Japan.
Hideyoshi fought Tokugawa Ieyasu and Oda Nobukatsu in a long series of clashes that ended without a decisive battlefield result. The conflict mattered because it pushed Hideyoshi toward political compromise with Ieyasu, which reduced resistance to nationwide unification.
Hideyoshi was appointed kampaku (imperial regent/chancellor), and the emperor granted him the family name “Toyotomi.” This court recognition strengthened Hideyoshi’s legitimacy and helped him govern through both military authority and formal institutions.
Hideyoshi’s forces invaded Shikoku and compelled the Chōsokabe clan to submit. This campaign reduced one more regional power base and expanded the Toyotomi coalition into western Japan.
Hideyoshi’s armies campaigned across Kyūshū and forced the Shimazu to submit, ending their bid for dominance in southern Japan. With Kyūshū brought into the Toyotomi sphere, most major independent powers had been absorbed or neutralized.
Hideyoshi issued the Bateren (missionary expulsion) edict in 1587, ordering Christian missionaries to leave and placing new limits on missionary activity. The policy signaled that the Toyotomi regime would tightly manage foreign religious influence alongside trade.
Hideyoshi issued the “Sword Hunt” edict to confiscate weapons from non-warriors. This policy supported social control by limiting armed resistance and reinforced a sharper division between the warrior class and the farming population.
Hideyoshi’s forces besieged Odawara Castle, leading the Later Hōjō leadership to surrender. The fall of Odawara removed the last major independent regional bloc opposing Toyotomi authority, making “unification” a workable political reality.
Hideyoshi stepped back from the office of kampaku, taking the title taikō (retired regent), and positioned his adopted heir Toyotomi Hidetsugu in a leading role. This change was meant to stabilize succession while Hideyoshi still held decisive power behind the scenes.
The Taikō Kenchi land survey reached a nationwide, standardized phase in the mid-1590s, producing records used for taxation and administration. By tying land value to expected rice output and clarifying rights to fields, the survey strengthened central rule and shaped later Tokugawa governance.
Hideyoshi died at Fushimi in 1598, leaving a child heir (Hideyori) and an unsettled political balance among top lords. His administrative reforms and coalition-based governance outlasted him, but his death also marked a turning point toward the power struggles that soon followed.
