In the rebuilding and social disruption that followed, artists and writers often portrayed modern city life as unstable and fragmented—an important theme in late Taishō and early Shōwa modernism.
Writers associated with Shinkankakuha (the “School of New Perceptions”) started the journal Bungei Jidai to promote modernist prose focused on new ways of sensing and describing reality. Their work reflected rapid changes in technology and city life, and became a major literary modernist current in the 1920s.
Yanagi Sōetsu and collaborators opened the Chōsen Folk Art Museum in Seoul, highlighting Korean folk crafts during Japan’s colonial period. Yanagi Sōetsu and potter colleagues Hamada Shōji and Kawai Kanjirō coined the term mingei (“folk craft”) to describe everyday handmade objects made by ordinary people. Kobayashi Takiji died in Tokyo after being arrested and interrogated by the Special Higher Police, becoming a symbol of the risks faced by leftist writers. His death marked a turning point: the cultural space for radical modernism and proletarian publishing narrowed sharply in the early 1930s.
Army officers attempted a coup in Tokyo, and although it failed, it increased military influence over government. This political shift strengthened a climate of surveillance and conformity that constrained experimental and critical cultural production across literature, film, and visual arts.
The Japanese Folk Crafts Museum opened to collect and exhibit mingei objects and promote folk-craft values. It represented an institutional “home” for a craft-centered modernism that contrasted with both elite academic art and politically radical avant-garde circles.
