Adalbero of Reims, a leading church supporter of Hugh Capet’s accession, died in January 989. His influence had helped defend the idea that the crown could be awarded by election. With Adalbero gone, Hugh lost a key ally at a moment when his dynasty was still new and vulnerable.
After Adalbero’s death, Hugh supported placing Arnulf (a Carolingian prince by birth) in the powerful archbishopric of Reims in 989. The post mattered because Reims was central to royal coronations and church legitimacy. The appointment was risky: Arnulf’s family ties connected him to Hugh’s rivals.
By 991, Hugh Capet’s opponents suffered a major setback when Charles of Lorraine was captured and imprisoned. Removing Charles reduced the immediate danger of a Carolingian restoration. It also helped Hugh and Robert focus on holding the kingdom together through alliances rather than direct control.
In June 991, a church council at Reims deposed Arnulf as archbishop and installed Gerbert of Aurillac in his place. This was controversial because Pope John XV did not accept Arnulf’s removal, turning a French political struggle into a wider dispute about church authority. The episode shows how Hugh’s monarchy depended on cooperation—and conflict—with senior clergy.
In 993, a plot involving Odo I of Blois and the bishop of Laon aimed to deliver Hugh Capet and Robert to Emperor Otto III. The plan failed, but the lack of harsh punishment highlighted how weak royal enforcement could be against powerful nobles. Hugh’s survival depended in part on rival nobles being unable to coordinate effectively against him.
In 995, Pope John XV sent a representative to review the disputed removal of Arnulf and the installation of Gerbert. This papal response pressured French church leaders to reconsider what had been done without Rome’s approval. The conflict foreshadowed later medieval debates over who had the final say in major church appointments.
Hugh Capet died in 996 in Paris, and Robert II became the sole king. The succession was relatively smooth in large part because Robert had already been crowned during Hugh’s lifetime. This peaceful handover marked a clear outcome of Hugh’s main achievement: establishing a dynasty that would rule France for centuries.
