Prince Robert of Clermont, a younger son of King Louis IX of France, married Beatrice of Burgundy, heiress associated with the Bourbon lordship. This marriage tied a Capetian cadet line to the Bourbon lands and name. Later generations would use this connection to claim senior Capetian descent when other lines failed.
Louis I, son of Robert of Clermont and Beatrice, was raised to duke, creating the formal title "Duke of Bourbon." The new dukedom increased the family’s rank and political weight among French princes. This elevation was a key step from regional lordship to major dynastic power.
During the Hundred Years’ War, John I, Duke of Bourbon was captured by the English at the Battle of Agincourt. His long captivity weakened the senior Bourbon ducal line’s direct leadership at a critical moment. It also shifted more day-to-day authority to his heirs and advisers in the Bourbon territories.
Charles I succeeded as Duke of Bourbon after John I and led the duchy through the later stages of the Hundred Years’ War. Even before formally inheriting, he effectively managed Bourbon affairs while his father remained a prisoner. His tenure shows how the ducal Bourbons remained important nobles, but not yet close to the crown.
Charles III, Duke of Bourbon—France’s constable (top military officer)—broke with King Francis I after disputes over inheritance and royal pressure. He entered the service of the Habsburg emperor Charles V, turning a leading French prince into a foreign-backed rival. The defection became a warning example of how royal centralization could collide with great noble power.
At the Battle of Pavia, imperial forces defeated the French and captured King Francis I. The wider conflict involved nobles and factions on both sides, and it exposed France’s vulnerability in Italy and at home. In the long run, repeated crises like this strengthened the French monarchy’s push to control powerful noble houses.
Imperial troops marched on Rome and violently sacked the city under the command of the "renegade" Duke of Bourbon. Charles III was killed during the assault, and the senior Bourbon ducal line soon ended as a major political force. This helped shift Bourbon prominence toward other cadet branches—especially the Bourbon-Vendôme line.
With the ducal senior line fading, Antoine de Bourbon (Duke of Vendôme) emerged as head of the House of Bourbon. This mattered because the Bourbons were Capetians in the male line, which kept them in the legal succession to the French crown. The Bourbon-Vendôme branch would later become central during the Wars of Religion.
Antoine de Bourbon married Jeanne d’Albret, linking the Bourbons to the Kingdom of Navarre through her inheritance. This marriage gave the Bourbon-Vendôme line royal status beyond France and positioned their children for wider claims. It also set up later conflicts, because Navarre and parts of France became deeply involved in the Protestant-Catholic divide.
After Jeanne d’Albret’s death, her son Henry inherited as King of Navarre (as Henry III of Navarre). He was raised in a Protestant environment and became a major political and military leader among French Protestants (Huguenots). His position made him both a royal ruler and, increasingly, a contender in the French succession.
King Henry III of France was assassinated, ending the Valois male line. As the leading male-line Capetian, Henry of Navarre became King Henry IV, the first Bourbon king of France, but many Catholics refused to accept him at first. His accession opened a struggle over legitimacy that was intertwined with the French Wars of Religion.
To broaden support and secure his rule, Henry formally converted to Catholicism at Saint-Denis. The conversion was a political turning point: it undercut the Catholic League’s main objection to his kingship and helped open the way to control key cities. It also showed how dynastic succession and religious conflict were tightly connected in late 16th-century France.
Henry IV was crowned at Chartres rather than the traditional coronation site at Reims, which was not available to him at the time. The coronation strengthened his claim as king in the eyes of many subjects and institutions. It also marked a practical step from contested succession toward wider recognition of Bourbon rule.
Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes, granting French Protestants a significant measure of legal protection and freedom of worship in defined places. The edict aimed to reduce violence after decades of religious civil war and to stabilize the kingdom under the new Bourbon dynasty. It became a major legacy of Henry’s consolidation of power after his contested accession.
