King Philip IV (“the Fair”) died, and the French crown passed to his eldest son, Louis X. Because Philip’s sons were still young adults and had no surviving sons of their own, the long-term succession of the direct Capetian line became fragile.
Louis X ruled France after his father’s death. He had a daughter (Joan) but no surviving son when the crisis began, which created uncertainty because many powerful nobles expected the French crown to pass through men rather than through women.
Louis X died while his second wife, Clémence of Hungary, was pregnant. With no adult male heir ready to take the throne, Louis’s brother Philip (Count of Poitiers) positioned himself as regent to manage the kingdom until the child was born.
Clémence gave birth to a son, John I (“the Posthumous”), who became king from birth because his father was already dead. His reign mattered less for policy than for what it proved: the direct Capetian line could fail suddenly even when a male heir existed.
John I died only days after his birth. His death removed the only male child of Louis X and reopened the question of whether Louis’s daughter Joan could inherit the French crown.
After John I’s death, Louis X’s brother Philip became king as Philip V. Many French leaders supported him and rejected a female succession, setting a strong political precedent that the crown should pass through the male line.
Philip V was crowned at Reims, publicly confirming his rule after a disputed transition. The ceremony helped turn a contested takeover into an accepted kingship, even though debate continued about Joan’s rights.
Joan’s allies tried to defend her inherited claims, especially tied to Navarre’s former lands and the counties of Champagne and Brie. Over time, political deals and military pressure favored the reigning king, weakening Joan’s position in France even if her rights in Navarre remained a live issue.
Philip V died without a surviving son, so the crown passed to his brother Charles IV. This repeated pattern—brother succeeding brother—deepened the idea that France should be ruled by male heirs from the Capetian house, not by daughters.
Charles IV’s coronation reinforced his legitimacy after another non–father-to-son transfer of power. By this point, the monarchy was operating on a practical rule: the crown should stay with male Capetians when possible.
Charles IV died leaving his widow, Jeanne d’Évreux, pregnant. A regency was established under Philip of Valois (a close Capetian cousin) until it was known whether the child would be a boy who could continue the direct male line.
When Charles IV’s widow gave birth to a daughter, the direct Capetian male line ended. The leading French nobles recognized Philip of Valois as king, choosing a male-line Capetian cousin over claims that came through women (including Edward III of England through his mother).
Philip VI was crowned at Reims, marking a dynastic transition from the direct Capetians to the Valois branch. This resolved the immediate crisis inside France but left lasting tension because rival claimants—especially in England—did not fully accept the outcome.
After Charles IV’s death, Navarre—where female succession was possible—recognized Joan II as its ruler, ending the personal union between France and Navarre. In France, Philip VI remained king, and a later agreement had Joan and her husband give up claims to Champagne and Brie in exchange for other lands, showing how the succession crisis reshaped the map and the rules of inheritance.
