Napoleon’s army was decisively defeated by a large coalition force at Leipzig in Saxony. The defeat forced the French to retreat and sharply reduced French power in Germany, setting up the Coalition’s move toward the Rhine and, soon, France itself.
After the 1813 campaign, Coalition leaders chose to carry the war onto French soil rather than stop at the Rhine. Multiple armies advanced, creating pressure on Napoleon to defend Paris while also trying to keep enemy forces from combining.
Napoleon struck the Prussian-Russian army under Field Marshal Blücher at Brienne-le-Château. The battle did not stop the invasion, but it showed Napoleon’s intent to disrupt the Coalition’s advance before their armies could fully coordinate.
At La Rothière, Napoleon faced a larger Allied force and was beaten in a hard winter battle. The Coalition victory encouraged the Allies to continue their push toward Paris, while Napoleon looked for chances to strike at separated enemy columns.
Napoleon exploited a gap in Blücher’s stretched-out army and attacked at Champaubert. This began a fast-moving series of battles aimed at defeating parts of the Coalition forces before they could concentrate.
The day after Champaubert, Napoleon defeated Allied corps at Montmirail. The victory helped him keep the initiative for a few more days and delayed the Coalition’s northern advance toward Paris.
Napoleon continued his counterstroke by attacking Allied forces near Château-Thierry. The battle contributed to the overall goal of breaking up the Army of Silesia’s advance and buying time for the defense of France.
At Vauchamps, Napoleon inflicted heavy losses during a fighting retreat by Blücher’s troops. Even with these battlefield successes, Napoleon’s broader problem remained: the Coalition still had more men and could keep advancing on multiple routes.
Austria, Prussia, Russia, and the United Kingdom agreed to tighter cooperation and to sustain large forces in the field against France. This reduced the chance that Napoleon could split the Allies through negotiation or separate peace deals.
Napoleon attacked Allied positions on the Chemin des Dames ridge near Craonne and forced them back. The battle showed he could still win tactically, but the losses and the continuing Allied pressure limited what he could achieve afterward.
At Laon, Napoleon’s army was beaten by a larger Prussian-Russian force. The defeat weakened Napoleon’s ability to control the campaign’s pace and made it harder to stop the Allies from renewing their march toward Paris.
Napoleon struck back at Reims to restore his communications and disrupt the link between Allied armies. The recapture helped him briefly, but it did not reverse the overall strategic situation as Coalition forces continued closing in.
Napoleon encountered Schwarzenberg’s larger Allied army at Arcis-sur-Aube and was forced to withdraw. The setback contributed to the Allies choosing a direct approach toward Paris while Napoleon moved east in an attempt to threaten their supply lines.
Coalition forces defeated French marshals Marmont and Mortier at Fère-Champenoise. The victory removed a major screen protecting the capital and helped the Allies advance rapidly toward Paris.
Allied armies attacked Paris and defeated its defenders after heavy fighting on the city’s outskirts. With the capital effectively lost, Napoleon’s political support and ability to continue the war collapsed quickly.
After Paris fell, Napoleon abdicated as emperor and accepted exile to Elba under the Treaty of Fontainebleau. This formally ended his rule for this phase of the wars and marked the immediate fall of the First French Empire.
France and the Allied powers signed the First Treaty of Paris, establishing peace terms after Napoleon’s abdication. The settlement restored the Bourbon monarchy’s France to borders close to those before the Revolutionary expansion and set the stage for further negotiations at the Congress of Vienna.
