The Civil Code (later widely called the Napoleonic Code) was enacted as a consolidated body of civil law for France. It standardized rules on property, contracts, and family life and became one of the empire’s most lasting institutions, spreading—directly or indirectly—into many parts of Europe.
France’s Conservative Senate adopted a sénatus-consulte that transformed the Consulate into a hereditary empire and named Napoleon Bonaparte “Emperor of the French” as Napoleon I. This legal act (not the later coronation) formally created the First French Empire and set rules for succession in the Bonaparte family.
The Constitution of the Year XII (an organic sénatus-consulte) amended earlier republican constitutions to fit an imperial system. It made the imperial title hereditary and reshaped state institutions around the new regime, giving Napoleon a legal framework to govern as emperor.
Napoleon’s coronation took place at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, with Pope Pius VII present. The ceremony was designed to legitimize the new empire while distancing it from older royal traditions, including by emphasizing Napoleon’s own role in the crowning.
Napoleon expanded the imperial project beyond France by taking the title King of Italy and staging a separate coronation in Milan Cathedral. Using the Iron Crown of Lombardy linked the new regime to older symbols of rule in northern Italy and strengthened French control over the region.
Napoleon’s army defeated the combined forces of Austria and Russia at Austerlitz, a major turning point in the wars against the Third Coalition. The victory strengthened Napoleon’s diplomatic leverage and helped him reorganize central Europe in ways that favored the French Empire.
After Austerlitz, Austria signed the Treaty of Pressburg with France on harsh terms. Austria ceded important territories and recognized political changes that increased Napoleon’s influence in Germany and Italy, supporting the broader creation of French-aligned “client states.”
A law created the Imperial University as a single state-controlled body responsible for public education across the empire. This was meant to standardize training for teachers and officials and to tie schooling more tightly to the state’s needs and values.
A treaty created the Confederation of the Rhine by grouping German states under French influence, with Napoleon as “Protector.” This reorganization reduced older imperial structures in central Europe and provided troops and strategic depth for Napoleon’s wars.
Napoleon issued the Berlin Decree declaring the British Isles under blockade and restricting trade with Britain. This policy—often called the Continental System—was designed to hurt Britain economically, but it also pressured allies and occupied territories and created friction across Europe.
France signed separate treaties at Tilsit with Russia and Prussia after major French victories. The agreements reduced Prussia’s territory and power and aligned Russia—at least temporarily—with Napoleon’s system, helping extend the Continental System and stabilize Napoleon’s position on the continent.
Civilians in Madrid rose against French occupation on May 2, 1808, and the revolt was violently repressed. Instead of restoring order, the crackdown helped trigger a broader Spanish rebellion and a long war in Iberia that drained French resources and challenged the empire’s control.
Coronation of Napoleon and the Formation of the First French Empire (1804–1808)
