In early 1796, the French Directory (France’s five-man executive government) gave General Napoleon Bonaparte command of the Army of Italy. The army was short on supplies and faced Austrian and Piedmontese forces in northern Italy. The appointment put Napoleon in a position where battlefield success could quickly turn into political influence in Paris.
Napoleon’s opening offensive in the Apennines struck the seam between Austrian and Sardinian-Piedmontese forces. The fighting around Montenotte disrupted allied coordination and helped Napoleon keep his smaller army moving fast. This early success set the pattern for the campaign: rapid marches and attacking separated enemy forces.
After a string of French victories in April, Sardinia-Piedmont agreed to a truce with France at Cherasco. The armistice pulled one of Austria’s key partners out of the war in Italy and opened secure routes for French troops and supplies. It let Napoleon turn his full attention to the Austrian army in Lombardy.
At Lodi, Napoleon’s forces forced an Austrian rear guard from a bridge crossing on the Adda River. The clash was not the largest battle of the campaign, but it became famous because it boosted Napoleon’s standing with his soldiers and helped build his reputation for daring leadership. It also helped open the way into Milan and deeper into Austrian-held northern Italy.
Austria tried to relieve the important fortress of Mantua, where French forces had begun a long siege. Napoleon defeated an Austrian army at Castiglione, preventing the relief attempt and keeping French momentum. The battle showed how Napoleon used quick concentration of forces to win despite shifting fronts.
In November 1796, Austrian forces again tried to break the French hold on northern Italy and the siege of Mantua. Over three days at Arcole, Napoleon fought to stop this push and eventually forced the Austrians to withdraw. The hard-fought win helped keep the campaign from stalling during the winter.
In January 1797, Austria launched another major effort to relieve Mantua. Napoleon won a decisive victory at Rivoli, breaking the last large Austrian attempt to lift the siege. This success made the fall of Mantua far more likely and opened the road for French advances toward Austria itself.
After months of siege and repeated Austrian relief attempts, the fortress of Mantua surrendered to the French. With Mantua in French hands, Austria lost a key strongpoint in northern Italy. The surrender freed Napoleon to push north and east, turning battlefield victories into diplomatic pressure on Vienna.
After French advances threatened Austria’s heartland, Austria sought an armistice with France at Leoben. The agreement acted as a preliminary peace and signaled that Napoleon had moved from winning battles to shaping major diplomatic outcomes. It also strengthened his political weight at home, where the Directory depended on military success.
In mid-1797, Napoleon reorganized conquered territories in northern Italy into the Cisalpine Republic. Although presented as a sister republic, it relied on French military power and followed French political models. This step showed how Napoleon’s campaigns exported French revolutionary influence and created new leverage over Italy and Austria.
In September 1797, the Directory used troops to purge conservative and royalist opponents from the legislature. The episode weakened constitutional politics and confirmed the growing political role of the military in France. This shift mattered for Napoleon: it normalized the idea that armed force could decide political outcomes.
France and Austria signed the Treaty of Campo Formio, formally confirming many French gains from the Italian campaign. The treaty reshaped territory in Italy and beyond and marked the completion of Napoleon’s victory in his first Italian campaign. Peace with Austria left Britain as the main remaining major enemy of revolutionary France.
French forces invaded Switzerland and occupied Bern, ending the old Swiss confederation system. Under French protection, the centralized Helvetic Republic was established soon after. These changes showed how French military power, linked to leaders like Napoleon, was remaking neighboring states and provoking new resistance across Europe.
After Napoleon’s army landed in Egypt, the British fleet under Horatio Nelson destroyed much of the French fleet at Abū Qīr (Aboukir) Bay. The loss cut Napoleon’s main sea link to France and limited reinforcements and supplies. Strategically, it helped spark wider opposition to France and undercut the long-term value of the Egyptian expedition.
In late 1799, Napoleon left Egypt and returned to France as the Directory faced instability and war pressures. His earlier victories in Italy had made him one of the most famous generals in the country. His return positioned him to act directly in politics rather than only through distant military success.
On 9–10 November 1799 (18–19 Brumaire, Year VIII), Napoleon and allies overthrew the Directory and replaced it with the Consulate. The new system concentrated authority in the First Consul—Napoleon—making him the central figure in French government. This was the closing outcome of the 1796–1799 arc: Italian victories built his reputation and leverage, and political instability allowed him to convert military fame into state power.
