Armand Tuffin, marquis de La Rouërie, founded the Association bretonne in Brittany as a counter-revolutionary organization aiming to defend monarchy and Brittany’s traditional institutions. It later provided personnel and structure that fed into the Chouannerie.
La Rouërie ("Colonel Armand"), founder of the Breton Association, died while evading revolutionary authorities. His death disrupted the initial organized conspiracy, though networks and future Chouan leaders remained active.
During the Vendéan Virée de Galerne, the Battle of Le Mans ended in a major republican victory. Contemporary accounts of the campaign note the presence of Chouans alongside Vendéan forces, linking the struggles south and north of the Loire.
By spring 1794, guerrilla-style royalist resistance north of the Loire consolidated into what became known as the Chouannerie, especially around the Mayenne–Ille-et-Vilaine border (Fougères, Vitré, Laval), under leaders including Jean Chouan, Aimé du Boisguy, and Jean-Louis Treton ("Jambe d'Argent").
Jean Cottereau, known as Jean Chouan, a namesake figure for the movement, died in July 1794 at Olivet (Mayenne). His death did not end the uprising, but leadership increasingly shifted to other regional chiefs and networks.
At the Combat de la Ramée (near La Chapelle-Rainsouin), a Chouan force was surprised by republicans; the Chouan leader Jean-Louis Treton, known as Jambe d’Argent, was seriously wounded. The clash illustrates the small-unit, high-risk nature of early Chouan warfare.
The Convention of La Jaunaye was signed near Nantes, granting terms such as religious concessions and amnesty in an attempt to end major fighting in the Vendée and reduce associated royalist unrest, including Chouan-linked violence.
At the Manoir de La Mabilais in Rennes, Chouan representatives signed a peace agreement with republican authorities as part of a broader pacification strategy in western France.
The La Mabilais peace rapidly unraveled; republican authorities arrested the Chouan commander Cormatin (and other non-signatory leaders), helping to reignite conflict in Brittany and adjacent areas.
A British-supported royalist expedition landed on the Quiberon peninsula to support counter-revolution in western France, coordinating with Chouan forces. The operation escalated the conflict from guerrilla war toward larger conventional fighting.
Republican forces under Lazare Hoche crushed the Quiberon expedition; the defeat blunted hopes of a large-scale royalist restoration through foreign-backed landings and weakened Chouan prospects for sustained conventional operations.
The French Directory adopted the Law of Hostages to strengthen control in areas considered unstable, enabling local authorities to list and hold “hostages” responsible for certain offenses. The measure heightened tensions and helped fuel renewed western insurgency, including Chouan activity.
Napoleon Bonaparte’s coup overthrew the Directory (9–10 November 1799) and established the Consulate. The regime change reshaped pacification strategy in the west, as the new government prioritized ending civil war and restoring internal security.

Georges Cadoudal agreed to the Treaty of Beauregard with republican general Guillaume Brune, formally ending the “third chouannerie” in the Morbihan and marking a decisive step in the Consulate’s western pacification.
Norman Chouan leader Louis de Frotté was arrested at Alençon after being invited to a meeting with republican authorities; he was tried by a military tribunal and executed by firing squad. His death removed a prominent commander and further weakened organized resistance.
