On this date, peasants in the Stühlingen area (southwestern Holy Roman Empire) rose against their lords, beginning a chain of revolts. Local grievances over dues, labor services, and justice soon spread beyond one district. This early outbreak is often treated as the opening phase of the German Peasants’ War.
Over the following months, rebels formed armed groups called Haufen (bands/companies) in parts of southern and western Germany. Organizing this way helped peasants coordinate demands, supplies, and military actions. The movement’s scale grew quickly, turning scattered protests into a broader conflict.
Representatives from Upper Swabian peasant groups met in Memmingen to coordinate strategy against the Swabian League (a regional alliance of princes and cities). They proclaimed a “Christian Association,” aiming to present shared demands rather than isolated complaints. This helped unify the uprising politically, not just militarily.
At later Memmingen meetings, the peasants adopted the Twelve Articles, a widely printed set of demands grounded in “divine law.” The articles focused on issues like fair rents and tithes, access to common resources, and limits on oppressive labor obligations. Printing helped the program spread rapidly across German-speaking regions.
At Leipheim, Swabian League forces under Georg Truchsess von Waldburg defeated a peasant formation in one of the first major pitched battles of the war. The defeat showed the peasants’ disadvantage against trained troops and cavalry. It also signaled that negotiations would increasingly give way to battlefield decisions.
After the capture of Weinsberg, rebels killed Count Ludwig von Helfenstein and others in what became known as the Weinsberger Bluttat (“Weinsberg blood deed”). The event became a powerful symbol for many nobles and princes that the uprising had turned violent and threatening. It contributed to a harsher, more punitive response toward rebels.
Martin Luther issued Admonition to Peace, addressing both the peasants’ demands and the princes’ responsibilities. He urged restraint and warned against escalating violence. The pamphlet mattered because Luther’s public stance influenced how many townspeople and rulers interpreted the revolt during a critical moment.
Rebels pressured Würzburg to join the uprising and then moved against Marienberg Fortress, the seat of the prince-bishop. The siege highlighted a key rebel challenge: taking fortified strongholds required heavy artillery and coordination. Its failure would soon expose rebel forces to counterattack by organized princely armies.
At Böblingen, Swabian League forces broke peasant lines and killed thousands during the rout. The battle damaged the uprising in Württemberg and nearby areas by removing one of the larger rebel armies. It also reinforced the pattern that open-field battles usually favored professional troops.
Near Frankenhausen, princely forces defeated the peasant army associated with the radical preacher Thomas Müntzer. The fight on 14–15 May ended in a devastating loss for the rebels, with mass killing and capture of leaders. The battle became a turning point because it ended major organized resistance in Thuringia.
After the defeat at Frankenhausen, Müntzer was captured, tortured, tried, and executed at Mühlhausen. His death removed a prominent radical voice within the revolt and was used as a warning to other communities. It also marked the collapse of hopes for a religiously revolutionary “people’s” reformation tied to the uprising.
In late June, peasants near Pfeddersheim were defeated by forces tied to Elector Louis V, another sign that regional uprisings were being isolated and suppressed. After the battle, punishments and strict terms were imposed on participants and communities. By summer 1525, major peasant armies had been broken, and the war’s outcome was no longer in doubt.
By the end of 1525, most remaining resistance was crushed, and authorities carried out reprisals across affected territories. Contemporary and later estimates vary, but sources commonly emphasize extremely high peasant losses (often cited around 100,000 killed) and a strengthened position for princes and landlords. In the short term, the defeat discouraged further large-scale attempts to improve peasant conditions through revolt.
German Peasants' War (1524–1525)
