The Peace of Augsburg gave the first lasting legal framework for Catholic and Lutheran coexistence in the empire. The settlement reduced immediate conflict but left unresolved issues—especially other Protestant groups—that later fueled new crises.

Ferdinand II issued the Edict of Restitution, aiming to restore many church lands that had been taken by Protestants since earlier decades.
