Treaty of Xanten divides Jülich-Cleves inheritance

The Hohenzollerns of Brandenburg gained Cleves-Mark and Ravensberg, giving them important western territories far from their core lands. This added to Brandenburg’s “scattered” geography, a challenge that later rulers tried to solve through stronger central government and military power.
