In 1287, Matteo I Visconti was installed as capitano del popolo (captain of the people), a key civic office that could be used to build lasting personal power. With Ottone Visconti’s backing, Matteo expanded his authority beyond short terms of office. This helped turn Visconti leadership into a more stable, hereditary style of rule.
In 1310, after earlier exile, Matteo I Visconti recovered Milan with the help of Holy Roman Emperor Henry VII. Imperial backing mattered because Milan’s rulers often sought legal standing from the empire. The episode shows how Milan’s internal politics were tied to larger European power struggles.
On 1339-02-21, Visconti forces defeated Lodrisio Visconti and his mercenary army at Parabiago. The victory helped the ruling branch hold onto power during a period when hired soldiers (condottieri) could quickly change political outcomes. It also reinforced Milan’s ability to maintain control of its territory despite family rivalries.
On 1385-05-06, Gian Galeazzo Visconti deposed and imprisoned his uncle Bernabò Visconti, taking control of Milan. On 1450-02-26, condottiere Francesco Sforza entered Milan and was accepted as duke after the Ambrosian Republic weakened. His claim was strengthened by marriage to Bianca Maria Visconti, Filippo Maria’s daughter. The shift created the Sforza dynasty and re-stabilized Milan’s government after years of unrest.
On 1454-04-09, Milan and Venice signed the Peace of Lodi, ending a major war and recognizing Francesco Sforza as ruler of Milan. The treaty helped create a balance of power among major Italian states for decades. This relative stability supported Milan’s administrative growth and cultural investment during the Renaissance.
On 1499-10-06, King Louis XII of France entered Milan after Sforza authority collapsed under French military pressure. Louis claimed Milan through dynastic links to the Visconti line, making the duchy a central target in the wider Italian Wars. Milan’s control now became a repeated prize fought over by France, the empire, and local allies.
On 1515-09-13, French forces under Francis I fought at Marignano to secure their claim to the Duchy of Milan. The battle was a major turning point, allowing France to reassert control in Lombardy after earlier setbacks. It also showed how large infantry formations and artillery were reshaping warfare in this period.
On 1516-08-13, France and Spain signed the Treaty of Noyon. Spain (under Charles I, later Charles V) acknowledged French control of Milan, while France made concessions connected to Naples. The agreement shows that Milan’s fate was being decided by major European powers, not only Italian politics.
On 1521-11-20, Francesco II Sforza began his rule as duke after imperial forces pushed the French out of Milan. His restoration tied the duchy closely to Emperor Charles V’s strategy in Italy. Milan’s leadership now depended heavily on Habsburg military support.
On 1525-02-24, Charles V’s forces defeated Francis I of France at the Battle of Pavia near Milan, capturing the French king. The battle strongly shifted the balance of power in Italy toward the Habsburgs and weakened France’s position in the duchy. It also highlighted the growing battlefield role of firearms such as the arquebus.
On 1529-08-03, France and the Habsburgs signed the Treaty of Cambrai (the “Peace of the Ladies”). France renounced key claims in Italy, reflecting Charles V’s stronger position after years of war. For Milan, the treaty helped confirm that the duchy would remain within the Habsburg sphere.
In 1535, Duke Francesco II Sforza died without heirs, ending the Sforza line in Milan. The duchy devolved to Emperor Charles V and began being administered through Spanish (Habsburg) governors. This outcome closed the city-state era of Milanese dynastic rule and made Milan a key part of Habsburg power in Italy.
