In 1494, King Charles VIII of France invaded Italy, triggering a wider crisis known as the First Italian War. As the French army approached Tuscany, Florence faced pressure to choose sides and raise money and troops. This external shock weakened the Medici-led regime and opened space for radical political change in the city.
After making major concessions to Charles VIII, Piero de’ Medici lost public support and fled Florence. His fall ended the Medici’s direct rule and set off a power vacuum. Florentines began rebuilding their government as a republic, while Savonarola’s preaching gained political influence.
Charles VIII entered Florence with his army, and the city negotiated to avoid looting and destruction. Savonarola’s sermons and public standing helped frame the crisis as a moral and political turning point for Florence. The episode reinforced the sense that Florence’s future depended on both diplomacy and internal reform.
Florence adopted a new constitutional structure centered on a permanent Great Council (Consiglio Maggiore). This broadened political participation among eligible citizens and aimed to prevent a single family from dominating the state. Savonarola supported these republican reforms, linking civic government to religious renewal.
As Italian states formed alliances against France, Florence’s position created friction with Pope Alexander VI. Savonarola’s influence and his criticism of corruption in Rome increased tensions. Over time, the pope moved from warnings and administrative measures to formal church penalties.
Supporters of Savonarola organized a major “Bonfire of the Vanities” in Florence, publicly burning items viewed as promoting sin and vanity (such as luxury goods, cosmetics, gambling items, and some artworks and books). The event symbolized a new kind of moral regulation tied to civic identity. It also sharpened opposition among Florentines who felt the movement attacked culture and personal freedom.
Pope Alexander VI excommunicated Savonarola, formally cutting him off from the Church’s sacraments and authority. The decision raised the stakes inside Florence: supporting Savonarola now risked church punishment and economic harm if Florence were placed under an interdict (a ban affecting religious life). The conflict increasingly became a struggle between local religious-popular politics and papal power.
After a period of silence, Savonarola resumed preaching in early 1498, disputing the legitimacy of the excommunication. This renewed defiance intensified divisions in Florence between his supporters (often called the Piagnoni) and opponents in the government and elite factions. The possibility of papal retaliation increased pressure to remove him from influence.
A proposed trial by fire was meant to test claims surrounding Savonarola’s authority and the validity of his excommunication, but the event collapsed without a clear outcome. Many Florentines interpreted the failure as embarrassment and deception rather than proof of holiness. Public opinion shifted quickly, making it easier for his enemies to act.
After unrest and factional violence, opponents attacked Savonarola’s base at the convent of San Marco. He was taken into custody with close followers and treated as a criminal rather than a respected religious reformer. His arrest marked the end of his effective control over Florentine public life.
Church authorities and papal commissioners arrived to conclude proceedings against Savonarola and his associates. After interrogation and torture, an ecclesiastical process declared him guilty and he was handed to civil authorities for execution. The sequence showed how closely papal policy and Florentine factional politics had become linked.
Savonarola and two fellow Dominicans were executed in Florence’s main civic square, then their bodies were burned and the ashes scattered in the Arno to discourage relic-making and martyr cults. The execution ended his brief period as Florence’s dominant moral and political voice. In the aftermath, Florence’s republic continued, but without Savonarola’s guiding role, and the episode remained a lasting warning about the risks of combining religious zeal with state power.
