In 838, Prince Sicard of Benevento seized Amalfi during fighting in southern Italy. After Sicard was assassinated in 839, Amalfi pushed out Lombard control and began operating as a self-governing port community. This break set the stage for Amalfi’s rise as an independent sea-trading power.
After 839, Amalfi’s early leaders are often described as prefects, reflecting a civic government rooted in local election and merchant interests. Although Amalfi still interacted with larger powers (especially Byzantium and nearby Naples), its day-to-day rule increasingly centered on its own institutions. This civic stability supported investment in ships, crews, and long-distance commerce.
By the late 9th and 10th centuries, Amalfi’s merchants were active across the Mediterranean, trading with both Christian and Muslim ports. These connections tied Amalfi to the Byzantine world and to North African and eastern markets, giving the city access to valuable goods and coin-based commerce. Trade wealth strengthened a politically influential merchant class at home.
Around 914, sources describe Mastalus I as being appointed or recognized as a leading magistrate (often called a judge/patrician) in Amalfi. This marks a shift from the earlier prefect era toward more formalized leadership titles. The change reflects Amalfi’s growing complexity as a trading state with expanding legal and administrative needs.
In 958, Amalfi elected a duke (also described as a doge), a step that signaled stronger, more centralized leadership. The duchy remained closely connected to regional powers but operated as a de facto independent city-state. This political form helped Amalfi protect commercial interests and negotiate in a competitive Mediterranean economy.
During the 10th and 11th centuries, Amalfitans took advantage of opportunities in the Byzantine capital, Constantinople, which served as a major hub for eastern Mediterranean trade. Imperial authorities used titles and privileges to keep Amalfi within Byzantium’s influence. These ties strengthened Amalfi’s role as an intermediary between eastern and western markets.
In the mid-to-late 11th century, Amalfitan merchants helped establish a Latin church and hospice in Jerusalem to support Christian pilgrims. The hospice later became linked to the tradition that developed into the Knights Hospitaller (an order that began as a charitable hospital community). This shows how Amalfi’s commercial routes also supported religious travel and institutions.
In 1073, the Norman leader Robert Guiscard took Amalfi, ending its full political independence. Although Amalfi’s merchants and local elites continued to matter economically, Norman control changed the city’s strategic freedom in diplomacy and war. The takeover also placed Amalfi within the wider Norman push to consolidate southern Italy.
Amalfi became associated with the Tabula Amalfitana (Amalfitan Laws), a maritime law code used as a reference for sea trade rules. The code is commonly described as compiled in the 11th–12th centuries, reflecting the needs of busy merchant shipping (contracts, crews, losses at sea). Its reputation points to Amalfi’s role as an early legal center for Mediterranean commerce.
In 1131, during Roger II’s consolidation of southern Italy, Amalfi resisted demands but was blockaded and pressured into capitulation. This episode shows Amalfi’s reduced ability to defend itself against larger naval powers. It also tied Amalfi’s fate to the emerging Norman Kingdom of Sicily.
In 1135, Pisa seized Amalfi, part of a wider struggle among Italian maritime cities and Norman-aligned forces. The attack damaged Amalfi’s economic and political position at a time when rivals like Pisa and Genoa were expanding. It marked a major turning point from regional power to vulnerable coastal town.
In 1137, Pisa returned and sacked Amalfi, an event widely treated as the endpoint of Amalfi’s city-state status. After this, Amalfi no longer functioned as an independent maritime republic and rapidly lost its earlier dominance in Mediterranean trade. The legacy of the republic continued mainly through its legal traditions and its place in the history of Italian maritime commerce.
