In 1063, a Pisan fleet attacked the Sicilian coast and entered the port of Palermo, capturing and selling ships and cargo. Contemporary inscriptions later tied this windfall to the start of major building work on Pisa’s cathedral complex. The episode shows how maritime warfare and commerce helped finance civic projects and power.
In 1092, Pope Urban II recognized Pisa’s ecclesiastical primacy over Corsica and Sardinia and raised Pisa to an archbishopric. While this was a church decision, it also mattered politically because it supported Pisa’s ambitions in the Tyrrhenian Sea. In practice, these island claims became a long-term point of conflict with rivals such as Genoa and Aragon.
A large Pisan fleet sailed to the eastern Mediterranean in support of the First Crusade and was involved in operations around 1099. Participation helped Pisa win influence and trading privileges in Levantine ports (key coastal trade cities). These connections supported Pisa’s identity as a maritime republic and strengthened its long-distance commerce.
Between 1113 and 1115, Pisa led a crusading expedition against the Muslim taifa of Majorca in the Balearic Islands. The campaign briefly captured key settlements and targeted piracy and captive-taking that threatened shipping. Even though control did not last long, it showed Pisa’s ability to project force far from Tuscany.
On 1241-05-03, Pisa fought alongside Emperor Frederick II against Genoa near the islands of Giglio and Montecristo. The imperial-Pisan fleet won and captured many church leaders traveling for a council, deepening Pisa’s clash with the papacy. The aftermath included an interdict and excommunication pressures that complicated Pisa’s diplomacy.
On 1261-03-13, Genoa signed the Treaty of Nymphaeum with Michael VIII Palaiologos’s Empire of Nicaea. The deal promised Genoa major commercial privileges in Byzantine lands, especially around Constantinople, and strengthened Genoa’s naval position in the eastern Mediterranean. This broader shift in trade advantages intensified pressure on Pisa in long-distance commerce.
On 1284-08-06, Pisa’s fleet fought Genoa near the islet of Meloria and suffered a decisive defeat. Thousands of Pisans were killed or captured, and much of Pisa’s naval strength was lost in a single battle. This event is widely treated as the turning point that began Pisa’s long decline as a major Mediterranean sea power.
After Meloria, Genoa targeted Pisa’s access to the sea by attacking Porto Pisano (Pisa’s port area). In 1290, a Genoese fleet sacked the harbor and damaged its defenses, further weakening Pisan trade and naval recovery. With the port impaired, Pisa had fewer tools to rebuild the maritime system that had supported its wealth.
On 1315-08-29, Pisa under Uguccione della Faggiuola defeated a coalition led by Florence and supported by Naples at the Battle of Montecatini. The victory showed Pisa could still win major battles on land despite maritime decline. However, it did not reverse the deeper economic and strategic damage caused by the loss of naval dominance.
On 1323-06-28, the Crown of Aragon began the siege of Villa di Chiesa (Iglesias), opening a major campaign against Pisa’s holdings in Sardinia. The fighting marked the start of the 1323–1324 conquest that ended effective Pisan control over key parts of the island. Losing Sardinia reduced Pisa’s resources and strategic bases in the western Mediterranean.
On 1324-02-29, Aragonese forces defeated a Pisan army at the Battle of Lucocisterna near Cagliari. The battle helped the Aragonese tighten control around the island’s key strongholds and hastened Pisa’s retreat from Sardinia. This loss confirmed that Pisa’s overseas territorial power was no longer sustainable.
On 1399-02-13, Pisa’s ruler Gherardo Appiani sold Pisa and its territory to Gian Galeazzo Visconti for 200,000 florins. The sale reflected Pisa’s weakened finances and political position after a century of military setbacks and shrinking maritime power. It also marked a major step away from the older communal independence associated with Pisa’s republic era.
On 1406-10-09, Florentine forces entered Pisa after a long siege, and the city surrendered. This conquest ended Pisa’s independence and brought it under Florentine control, closing the long arc from maritime peak to regional subordination. Pisa’s decline after Meloria did not happen overnight, but this takeover marked a clear political endpoint.
