On this date, the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed under King Victor Emmanuel II. Unification did not end political debates about where Italy’s borders should be, because some Italian-speaking communities remained under foreign rule. This gap between the new state and some nationalists’ goals helped set the stage for later irredentism (the idea of “unredeemed” lands).
After the Austro-Prussian War, Italy gained Venetia, bringing a major region into the kingdom. However, areas with Italian-speaking populations such as Trento and Trieste remained in the Habsburg Empire. This outcome reinforced the belief among some activists that national unity was still unfinished.
Italian forces entered Rome in 1870, and Rome became the capital soon after. Many Italians treated this as the final act of the Risorgimento (unification). Yet irredentists argued that “national completion” required bringing remaining Italian-speaking areas—especially under Austria-Hungary—into Italy.
In 1877, politician Matteo Renato Imbriani publicly used the phrase “terre irredente” (“unredeemed lands”) to describe Italian areas still under Austria after 1866. The phrase quickly became a powerful political label. It gave a name and emotional focus to a movement that framed border revision as finishing the Risorgimento.
Also in 1877, Imbriani helped organize the Associazione in pro dell’Italia irredenta to support the cause of “unredeemed” territories. The group connected activists, public meetings, and propaganda to a clear political program. This helped turn a general sentiment into a more organized nationalist movement.
Italy entered the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary in May 1882. This was a defensive pact and reflected Italy’s diplomatic concerns (especially about France). At the same time, the alliance created tension at home because Austria-Hungary controlled key irredentist targets like Trento and Trieste.
Guglielmo Oberdan, an Italian irredentist from Trieste, was executed by Austria in 1882 after a failed assassination attempt against Emperor Franz Joseph. His death became a symbol for anti-Austrian nationalists and helped strengthen the movement’s culture of sacrifice. Martyr stories like this were used to mobilize public feeling for border change.
In 1889, the Società Dante Alighieri was founded to spread Italian language and culture. Its early mission included attention to Italians living outside the kingdom, including people in the “irredent” borderlands. Cultural work—schools, publications, and associations—became a key tool alongside formal politics.
On 26 April 1915, Italy signed the secret Treaty of London with Britain, France, and Russia. In return for entering World War I on the Allied side, Italy was promised territories long linked to irredentist aims, including Trentino and Trieste (and other areas along the Adriatic). The agreement tied nationalist border goals directly to wartime decision-making.
Cesare Battisti, a leading Trentino irredentist who volunteered for the Italian army, was captured by Austrian forces in July 1916. He was tried and executed, and his death was widely publicized. In Italy, Battisti became a major wartime symbol used to frame the conflict as a fight to complete national unity.
Austria-Hungary and the Allies (with Italy as the key Allied power on this front) signed the Armistice of Villa Giusti on 3 November 1918. The ceasefire took effect on 4 November, and Austria-Hungary agreed to evacuate areas that included several territories claimed by irredentists. The armistice marked the military collapse that made postwar border change possible.
The Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye was signed on 10 September 1919 between Austria and the Allied powers. It confirmed major territorial transfers to Italy, including Trento (Trentino), southern Tirol (South Tyrol), Trieste, and Istria. For many Italians, this looked like the main achievement of irredentism—though disputes over other promised areas continued.
On 12 September 1919, Gabriele D’Annunzio led irregular forces into Fiume (Rijeka) and occupied the city. The action protested what nationalists called a “mutilated victory,” arguing Italy had not received all it was promised or deserved. This episode showed how irredentist ideas could fuel direct action outside normal government control.
By the end of 1919, Italy had gained key “unredeemed” lands like Trentino and Trieste, but many wider claims—especially along the eastern Adriatic—remained contested with new neighboring states. These disputes kept nationalist politics intense and helped weaken confidence in liberal governments. The unresolved outcome in 1919 closed the 1861–1919 arc by achieving some core irredentist goals while leaving a legacy of frustration that later movements would exploit.
