On International Women’s Day (New Style), crowds in Petrograd protested bread shortages and war hardship, and strikes spread quickly. Over the next few days, the unrest grew into a citywide political crisis that the government struggled to control. This set the stage for the collapse of the tsarist system in the capital.
Tsar Nicholas II abdicated, ending the Romanov monarchy and leaving Russia without an emperor. A Provisional Government began running the state, while worker-and-soldier councils (soviets) also claimed authority in the capital. This “dual power” arrangement created instability that shaped the rest of 1917.
Vladimir Lenin returned from exile to Petrograd and argued that the Bolsheviks should not support the Provisional Government. In speeches later known as the “April Theses,” he urged a shift toward “all power to the soviets” and an end to the war. These ideas helped reposition the Bolsheviks from a minority faction toward a party aiming to take power.
Armed demonstrations by workers and soldiers erupted in Petrograd against the Provisional Government. The government put down the unrest and arrested or pursued leading Bolsheviks, causing a short-term decline in their influence. The episode also showed how volatile the capital had become under wartime pressure.
A confrontation between General Lavr Kornilov and Prime Minister Aleksandr Kerensky escalated into an attempted coup. The effort collapsed, but the crisis damaged the Provisional Government and increased fear of counterrevolution. Bolsheviks benefited politically as defenders of Petrograd, helping them gain strength inside the soviets.
After being released from jail, Leon Trotsky rose rapidly and became chairman of the Petrograd Soviet. This mattered because the Petrograd Soviet was a major center of revolutionary legitimacy in the capital. Under Trotsky’s leadership, the soviet became a key platform for organizing armed resistance and, soon, a takeover.
As the political crisis deepened, the Bolshevik leadership moved from agitation to planning a seizure of power. The party’s top committee decided to prepare for an armed uprising, arguing that delaying would risk losing the moment. This decision linked political organizing in the soviets to direct action in Petrograd and beyond.
Bolshevik-led forces moved to take control of bridges, communication centers, and other strategic sites in Petrograd. These actions reduced the Provisional Government’s ability to coordinate loyal troops or control information. The takeover unfolded as the Second All-Russian Congress of Soviets was assembling, tying events on the streets to claims of legal authority.
The Provisional Government’s remaining ministers were arrested in Petrograd after Bolshevik forces captured the Winter Palace area. With Kerensky having fled, the government’s authority effectively collapsed in the capital. The Bolsheviks could now claim they had removed the old executive power and replaced it with soviet rule.
The Second All-Russian Congress of Soviets approved early measures associated with the new Bolshevik-led government. The Decree on Land abolished landed private ownership and called for redistribution through local peasant institutions, while the new leadership also pushed for ending Russia’s role in World War I. These decrees aimed to address the two biggest popular demands—land and peace—while consolidating the revolution’s authority.
In Moscow, power did not change hands smoothly, and armed fighting broke out between Bolsheviks and their opponents. The conflict lasted days and included artillery fire, making it one of the bloodiest urban episodes of the October Revolution. The Bolshevik victory helped extend their control from Petrograd to Russia’s other major political center.
A nationwide election produced a Constituent Assembly meant to create a new constitutional order. When it met in Petrograd, it rejected Bolshevik demands to recognize soviet authority, and the Bolsheviks and their allies walked out. The next day, troops dispersed the Assembly and the Bolshevik government dissolved it, signaling a decisive break with parliamentary alternatives.
Soviet Russia signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with the Central Powers, formally leaving World War I. The agreement imposed major territorial losses and showed how weak the new regime was militarily. Ending the war fulfilled a central Bolshevik promise, but it also intensified internal conflict and opposition that fed the wider civil war.
