On this date the Bolsheviks overthrew the Provisional Government in Petrograd and claimed authority through the soviets (workers’ and soldiers’ councils). Their takeover triggered armed resistance from political rivals and regional forces, setting the stage for a multi-front civil war.
Russia’s elected Constituent Assembly met in Petrograd but refused to accept Bolshevik authority. Bolshevik-aligned forces dispersed it the next day, and the government dissolved it, closing off a parliamentary route for opponents and intensifying the conflict over who ruled Russia.

After an attempt on Vladimir Lenin’s life and other attacks on Bolshevik officials, the Soviet government issued a decree authorizing intensified repression known as the Red Terror. The policy expanded the Cheka’s role and aimed to break resistance through arrests and executions, deepening the cycle of violence during the war.
A coup in Omsk elevated Admiral Alexander Kolchak as “Supreme Ruler of Russia,” aiming to unify anti-Bolshevik rule in Siberia. This strengthened the White movement’s state-like structures in the east, but also hardened political divisions and competition among anti-Bolshevik factions.
In mid-1919, White forces took Tsaritsyn, a strategic transport hub on the Volga River, after earlier sieges and fighting. Control of the city mattered for moving troops and supplies, and its changing hands reflected the shifting balance between Red and White armies during the war’s most intense phase.
The Far Eastern Republic was proclaimed in April 1920 in eastern Siberia as a nominally independent “buffer” between Soviet Russia and Japanese-held areas. It allowed Moscow to reduce direct clashes with Japan while still supporting Bolshevik-aligned forces in the region.
A large peasant revolt began in the Tambov region in August 1920, driven in part by anger at forced grain seizures and wartime controls. Its scale showed how civil war pressures extended beyond battlefields into rural society, and suppression required major Red Army and security operations.
The Red Army’s push toward Warsaw ended in a major Polish victory in August 1920 during the Russo-Polish War. The defeat limited Bolshevik plans to expand westward and forced a re-focus on internal fronts, while also shaping the postwar border between Poland and Soviet-controlled territories.
In November 1920, General Pyotr Wrangel’s forces evacuated Crimea by sea after Red Army advances made the peninsula untenable. This evacuation removed the last major White stronghold in European Russia and marked a decisive shift from large conventional fronts to smaller, regional conflicts.
Sailors and civilians at the Kronstadt naval base rebelled in March 1921, demanding political and economic changes. The revolt was crushed, but it strongly influenced Bolshevik leaders to adopt the New Economic Policy (NEP), a partial return to market mechanisms meant to stabilize a war-damaged economy.
Troops of the Far Eastern Republic entered Vladivostok after Japanese and White forces withdrew, restoring Bolshevik-aligned control over Russia’s key Pacific port. This was widely treated as a final military endpoint of the civil war in the Russian Far East.
In November 1922, the Far Eastern Republic was absorbed into the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic. The merger removed the last major semi-independent political structure created by the civil war and consolidated Soviet authority across most former imperial territory.
