A major church council convened in Moscow to depose Patriarch Nikon and settle disputes over ritual reforms meant to align Russian practice with Greek Orthodox usage. The council’s decisions helped cement the Raskol (schism), creating the Old Believers movement and adding long-term religious division to Romanov society.
Russia and Poland-Lithuania agreed to the Truce of Andrusovo, ending the 1654–1667 war. The settlement divided Ukraine along the Dnieper River and returned major territories (including Smolensk) to Russian control, marking a turning point in Romanov expansion.
After years of raids and rebellion across the Volga region, Cossack leader Stenka Razin was captured and executed in Moscow. The revolt showed the scale of social stress on Russia’s frontiers and helped push the state toward tighter control and harsher enforcement.
After Alexis I’s death, his son Fyodor III took the throne, keeping Romanov succession intact. Fyodor’s short reign continued state strengthening and set up later changes by reducing old elite privileges and encouraging Western learning at court.
The government ended mestnichestvo, a system that assigned top jobs based on family rank rather than ability. Abolishing it strengthened the tsar’s control over appointments and reduced the political power of older aristocratic rivalries.
After Fyodor III died without an heir, Moscow’s streltsy (musketeer regiments) rebelled during the succession struggle. The crisis ended with Ivan V and Peter I proclaimed co-tsars, while their sister Sophia became regent—closing the early Romanov consolidation period with an unstable but workable power-sharing settlement.
