After King Ferdinand II of Aragon died, Charles was proclaimed king of Aragon and Castile in Brussels, beginning his rule in Spain as Charles I (alongside his mother, Joanna, as nominal co-monarch). The proclamation highlighted the dynastic link between the Spanish crowns and the wider Habsburg lands.
Charles arrived in Spain to take up direct rule after being raised largely in the Low Countries. His unfamiliarity with Spanish languages and customs, and his reliance on advisers from outside Spain, helped fuel political tensions that would soon erupt into rebellion.
Charles was elected Holy Roman Emperor at Frankfurt, expanding his responsibilities far beyond the Iberian Peninsula. The election tied Spain’s monarchy more tightly to imperial politics in central Europe and intensified rivalry with France.

Royalist forces crushed the main Comunero army at the Battle of Villalar, capturing key rebel leaders. The defeat broke the rebellion’s momentum and helped stabilize Charles’s position in Castile.
At the Diet of Worms, Luther refused to recant, and Charles issued the Edict of Worms, declaring him an outlaw and banning his writings. This crisis made it harder for Charles to focus on Spain because it pulled him into the growing religious conflict in Germany.
Charles’s forces defeated France at the Battle of Pavia and captured King Francis I. The victory strengthened Habsburg influence in Italy and set the stage for negotiations that briefly favored Charles.
While still a prisoner, Francis I signed the Treaty of Madrid with Charles, agreeing to major concessions. Francis later refused to ratify it, but the episode showed how military success could translate into diplomatic pressure during Charles’s reign.
Charles married Isabella of Portugal, strengthening ties between the Iberian royal houses. The marriage also supported political stability, since Isabella would later serve as regent in Spain during Charles’s absences.
Mutinous imperial troops stormed Rome and looted the city, humiliating Pope Clement VII and shocking Europe. Although not launched on Charles’s direct orders, the event strengthened his leverage in Italy and reshaped papal-imperial relations.
The Treaty of Cambrai (the “Peace of the Ladies”) ended one phase of the Habsburg-Valois wars. It temporarily confirmed Charles’s dominant position in Italy and reduced pressure from France, allowing him to refocus on other threats.
Pope Clement VII crowned Charles in Bologna, marking the last time a Holy Roman Emperor was crowned by a pope. The coronation symbolized a renewed imperial-papal alignment after the turmoil of the late 1520s.
Charles led a major expedition that captured Tunis and reduced Ottoman-backed power there, restoring a local ruler aligned with Habsburg interests. The campaign showed that defending the Mediterranean against Ottoman expansion had become a central part of his strategy.
Charles issued the New Laws to limit abuses in Spanish America, including restrictions on the encomienda system (a grant of Indigenous labor and tribute). Enforcement proved difficult, but the laws reflected growing debate inside the empire about colonial governance and Indigenous rights.
Charles and Francis I agreed to the Peace of Crépy, scaling back certain territorial claims and pausing open war between them. The settlement helped Charles shift attention toward the religious and political crisis inside the Holy Roman Empire.
Charles defeated the Protestant Schmalkaldic League at the Battle of Mühlberg, a major military success in his effort to restore religious and political unity. The victory was significant, but it did not permanently resolve the conflicts driving the Reformation.
Joanna I (Charles’s mother) died in confinement, after decades as the nominal queen of Castile and Aragon. Her death removed a long-standing legal and symbolic complication, leaving Charles as sole monarch of the Spanish crowns.
Charles completed a key step in his abdications by granting Spain and its overseas empire to his son, Philip II. This began the formal division of Habsburg power between a Spanish branch and an Austrian-imperial branch, shaping European politics for generations.
