In 1556, Charles V transferred his Spanish territories and overseas empire to his son Philip II. This succession created a vast, multi-continental monarchy whose government was centered on Castile but ruled many distinct lands. Philip’s reign would be shaped by managing this scale while defending Catholicism and royal authority.
Spanish-led forces defeated France at the Battle of Saint-Quentin in northern France. The victory helped Philip II’s side gain leverage in the long conflict with France and set up later peace negotiations. It also showed the military weight of Habsburg resources in Europe.
Spain and France concluded peace at Cateau-Cambrésis, ending decades of fighting over Italy. The settlement left Habsburg Spain in a dominant position in Italy for the long term. With France temporarily checked, Philip II could focus more attention on religion and unrest in other parts of his monarchy.
Philip II established Madrid as the seat of his court and central government. This decision helped consolidate royal administration and made Madrid the political center of the Spanish monarchy. It also symbolized Philip’s preference for governing from Castile, even while ruling far-flung territories.
Work started on El Escorial, a combined palace, monastery, church, and royal burial site commissioned by Philip II. Built during the Catholic Reform (Counter-Reformation), it reflected the monarchy’s religious mission and administrative ambition. The project also became a lasting symbol of Philip’s style of rule: orderly, centralized, and intensely Catholic.
The Council of Trent ended in 1563 after setting key Catholic teachings and reforms in response to Protestant movements. Philip II strongly supported implementing these reforms across his realms. This hardened the monarchy’s commitment to Catholic uniformity, especially in areas with religious division.
After major unrest in the Low Countries, Philip II sent the Duke of Alba with an army. Alba set up the Council of Troubles, a special court that punished suspected rebels and heretics and intensified fear and resistance. Instead of restoring calm, harsh repression helped turn unrest into a longer revolt against Spanish rule.
In the Kingdom of Granada, Moriscos (Muslims converted to Christianity and their descendants) rebelled against policies that attacked their language and customs. The revolt became a serious internal war and was eventually crushed by royal forces. Its suppression led to forced dispersal and resettlement, tightening the crown’s control but deepening social wounds.
A Christian alliance led in part by Spain defeated the Ottoman fleet at Lepanto. Philip II’s half-brother Don John of Austria commanded the allied forces, and the victory boosted Christian morale. Even though it did not end Ottoman power, it helped secure the western Mediterranean and strengthened Spain’s prestige.
Several provinces and cities in the northern Low Countries signed the Union of Utrecht to coordinate resistance against Philip II. The agreement organized shared defense and governance while still reflecting provincial traditions and rights. It marked a major step toward a separate political community in the north.
After a succession crisis in Portugal, Philip II’s forces defeated a rival claimant near Lisbon at the Battle of Alcântara. This victory helped Philip secure recognition as king of Portugal, creating the Iberian Union (a dynastic union, not a single merged state). The union expanded Philip’s global reach by adding Portugal’s empire to his rule.
The States General of several rebellious provinces formally declared that Philip II had forfeited his right to rule them. This Act of Abjuration functioned as a declaration of independence during the Dutch Revolt. It transformed a rebellion into a direct claim that legitimate government depended on protecting subjects’ rights.
Philip II launched the Spanish Armada to support an invasion of England during rising conflict with Elizabeth I. The fleet sailed from Lisbon in 1588 but was badly damaged by fighting, logistical problems, and storms, and the invasion plan collapsed. The defeat weakened Spain’s ability to force a political settlement in northern Europe, though Spain remained powerful.
Spain and France signed the Peace of Vervins, with Spain recognizing Henry IV and agreeing to withdraw from certain occupied areas. The treaty largely restored earlier boundaries and reduced one major front of conflict. This allowed Philip II’s government to concentrate resources on other struggles, including the ongoing war in the Netherlands.
Philip II died at El Escorial in 1598 and was succeeded by his son Philip III. By the end of his reign, Spain had reached a high point in global extent (including Portugal after 1580) but faced heavy military and financial strain. The Dutch Revolt and conflict with England remained unresolved, shaping Spanish policy well after his death.
