In September 1620, Spanish forces under Ambrogio Spinola advanced into the Palatinate, attacking the lands of Frederick V, the “Winter King” of Bohemia. Spain’s goal was to defend Habsburg interests and keep open routes linking Italy, the Empire, and the Spanish Netherlands (often called the “Spanish Road”).
On 1620-11-08, the Battle of White Mountain near Prague ended the Bohemian Revolt’s main military phase in a decisive Catholic-Habsburg victory. Spanish forces were part of the winning coalition, and the outcome helped the Habsburgs shift from defense to punishing their opponents, including in the Palatinate.
In 1621 the Twelve Years’ Truce between Spain and the Dutch Republic expired, and fighting restarted. This mattered because Spain’s renewed war in the Netherlands became tightly linked to the wider Thirty Years’ War, competing for the same money, soldiers, and attention.
From 1621-09-05 to 1622-02-03, Spinola’s Army of Flanders besieged Jülich and took the fortress from the Dutch. The operation showed Spain’s strategy of using strongholds along the Rhine to pressure the Dutch and protect supply lines to its armies in the Low Countries.
After a long siege (1621–1623), Spanish-Imperial forces captured Frankenthal on 1623-03-20. The fall of this fortified town helped end major resistance in the Lower Palatinate and reinforced Spain’s role as a key military partner of the Austrian Habsburgs in the war’s early years.
From 1624-08-28 to 1625-06-05, Spinola’s forces besieged and took Breda from the Dutch Republic. The victory was important for Spanish prestige and bargaining power, but it also required huge resources, highlighting the financial strain of fighting in multiple theaters at once.
From 1628 to 1631, Spain fought in northern Italy over the Mantuan succession, supporting a rival claimant and defending Spanish Habsburg interests in Milan. The fighting mattered because it pulled France and Spain closer to direct conflict and further stretched Spain’s military system during the Thirty Years’ War.
England and Spain ended the Anglo-Spanish War with the Treaty of Madrid signed on 1630-11-15. The peace helped Spain reduce one front, so it could focus more on the Netherlands and the struggle for influence in the Empire and northern Italy.
On 1634-09-05 to 1634-09-06, a combined Imperial-Spanish army defeated Swedish-led forces at Nördlingen. The victory strengthened Habsburg control in southern Germany and helped push several German states toward negotiating with the emperor, changing the war’s direction.
On 1635-05-30, the Peace of Prague reshaped alliances inside the Holy Roman Empire and weakened the anti-Habsburg coalition. That same year, France declared war on Spain (dated 1635-05-19 in Britannica), turning Spain’s struggle into an open Franco-Spanish contest that overlapped with the Thirty Years’ War.
On 1639-10-21, the Dutch navy defeated a Spanish fleet at the Battle of the Downs while Spain tried to send troops and supplies to Flanders. The defeat damaged Spain’s ability to move reinforcements by sea and increased pressure on the Army of Flanders, a cornerstone of Spanish power in northern Europe.
On 1640-06-07, riots in Barcelona known as the Corpus de Sang helped ignite the Reapers’ War (the Catalan Revolt). The uprising was tied to anger over taxes and the quartering of royal troops, and it showed how Spain’s long war effort was destabilizing politics inside the Spanish Monarchy itself.
On 1643-05-19, France defeated a Spanish army at the Battle of Rocroi. The battle became a symbol of Spain’s weakening military edge in Europe and marked a major turning point in the Franco-Spanish fighting connected to the later Thirty Years’ War.
On 1648-01-30, Spain and the Dutch Republic signed the Peace of Münster, ending the Eighty Years’ War. Spain formally recognized Dutch independence, removing a major long-running conflict from the larger European war system.
On 1648-10-24, the Peace of Westphalia ended the Thirty Years’ War in the Holy Roman Empire. For Spain, the settlement confirmed a new balance of power: the Habsburg position in Europe was weaker, and Spain’s priorities increasingly shifted toward defending its own territories and continuing its separate war with France beyond 1648.
Spain's involvement in the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648)
