From 970 to 994, Sancho II (“Abarca”) ruled as king of Pamplona and also held the county of Aragon. The arrangement also foreshadowed later political fragmentation, since Aragon would eventually develop into its own kingdom.
Sancho III (“the Great”) ruled roughly from about 1000 to 1035 and achieved a level of dominance over the Christian states of northern Spain. In 1076, King Sancho IV of Pamplona/Navarre was assassinated at Peñalén amid internal and external pressure. From 1104 to 1134, Alfonso I (“the Battler”) was king of both Aragon and Navarre, continuing the post-1076 political union. The union ended after Alfonso’s death, creating an opening for Navarre to reassert its separate identity.
After Alfonso I died in 1134, Navarrese leaders proclaimed García Ramírez (“the Restorer”) as king, breaking the union with Aragon. This restoration re-established an independent Navarre that had to balance diplomacy and war among larger neighbors, especially Castile and Aragon. During Sancho VI’s reign (1150–1194), the monarchy formally shifted its main title from “King of Pamplona” to “King of Navarre,” reflecting a broader territorial and political identity. Sancho VI also worked to position Navarre within wider European politics, which later affected succession and alliances.
Around 1200, during the reign of Sancho VII, Castile took key western Basque territories (including Álava and Gipuzkoa) from Navarre.
