In September 1203, Almohad forces displaced the earlier rulers on Mallorca and took control of the Balearic Islands. This shift tied the islands more closely to wider North African–Iberian politics and set the immediate background for later Christian maritime campaigns against Majorcan-based raiding and shipping threats.
In 1208, Abu Yahya Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abi Imran al-Tinmalali became the Almohad-appointed governor (wālī) of Mallorca. His long rule helped stabilize island government, but it also coincided with continued maritime conflict in the western Mediterranean, including piracy and retaliatory raids.
In December 1228, the Catalan Courts meeting in Barcelona discussed whether to launch a major campaign against the Balearic Islands (or instead focus on Valencia). These meetings mattered because they brought together the crown, nobles, clergy, and urban leaders to organize funding and commitments for a large seaborne operation.
On 28 August 1229, agreements supporting the invasion of Mallorca were ratified at Tarragona. This step turned earlier planning into a practical campaign plan, including provisions aimed at attracting participants by clarifying expected rights and shares after conquest.
On 5 September 1229, King James I’s force departed from the Catalan coast with a large fleet to attack Mallorca. The voyage was central to the campaign because it shows the Crown of Aragon’s growing ability to mount coordinated maritime warfare—moving troops, horses, and supplies across open sea.
The invading force landed on the south coast of Mallorca around midnight on 10 September 1229 after winds disrupted earlier plans. Securing a safe landing site was a make-or-break moment: without an established beachhead, the campaign could have collapsed before any inland fighting began.
On 12 September 1229, James I’s army fought the Battle of Portopí against the island’s Almohad defenders. The victory helped the invaders push toward the capital area and set conditions for a prolonged siege of Madina Mayurqa (Palma), even as the battle also brought significant losses among leading nobles.
On 31 December 1229, James I’s forces took Madina Mayurqa, the main city of Mallorca. Taking the capital was the campaign’s decisive turning point: it broke centralized control and allowed the Crown of Aragon to begin reorganizing the island’s governance and settlement patterns.
In March 1230, Crown of Aragon forces captured Artà as operations expanded beyond Palma. These follow-on sieges mattered because conquest did not end with the capital: remaining communities and strongpoints had to be subdued for the new regime to control the countryside and coastlines.
In 1231, royal forces pressed remaining resistance centered in hard-to-reach castles and mountain refuges such as Alaró. These operations were crucial because they turned a city-centered victory into practical control of the whole island, reducing the ability of remaining groups to challenge coastal settlement and shipping routes.
On 17 June 1231, James I agreed with Menorca’s Muslim leadership to accept tribute and vassal-style submission rather than immediate invasion. This diplomatic outcome extended Aragonese influence across the Balearics while freeing resources for other fronts of the Reconquista, especially campaigns on the mainland.
By late 1231, the conquest-and-submission strategy had secured Mallorca militarily and brought Menorca into a tributary relationship, reshaping power in the western Mediterranean. The outcome strengthened the Crown of Aragon’s maritime reach and provided a base for later expansion, including the subsequent conquest of Ibiza (1235) beyond this timeline’s endpoint.
