In 1031, Córdoba’s caliphate was formally ended when the last caliph was deposed and central authority collapsed. In the power vacuum, al-Andalus broke into many small, independent states called taifas (factions). This fragmentation reshaped politics across Iberia by replacing one government with dozens of rival courts.
After 1031, taifas multiplied and then gradually clustered around stronger centers such as Seville, Toledo, Zaragoza, Badajoz, Valencia, and Granada. Taifa rulers competed through war, alliances, and claims to legitimacy, often hiring soldiers or negotiating with neighbors to survive. Political division made coordinated defense difficult even when the taifas were wealthy and culturally active.
In 1039, Sulaymān ibn Muḥammad ibn Hūd took Zaragoza and established the Hūdids as rulers there. Zaragoza became a major northeastern taifa with its own military and diplomatic agenda. Its emergence shows how leadership changed hands quickly in the taifa era, as local elites replaced older ruling groups.
Seville had already emerged as a taifa before 1031, and under the Abbadid dynasty it expanded and absorbed nearby territories during the mid-11th century. This growth made Seville one of the most influential taifas in the south. Its rise illustrates how some taifas tried to rebuild regional power even while al-Andalus remained politically divided.
As Christian kingdoms expanded, several taifas began paying parias (tribute payments) to secure peace or buy military support. Alfonso VI of León-Castile became a major recipient, increasing his resources for further campaigns. The practice also deepened taifa rivalries, since one taifa might fund a Christian ally against another.
In May 1085, Alfonso VI took Toledo, one of the most important cities of central Iberia. The loss was a major political shock for the taifas and opened strategic routes deeper into former Umayyad territory. It also intensified calls among some taifa rulers for outside help against Christian advances.
After Toledo fell, several taifa kings sought military support from the Almoravids, a powerful Berber movement and dynasty based in North Africa. This decision aimed to stop Christian expansion but also brought a new external power into Iberian politics. The invitation created a path for the Almoravids to move from allies to rulers.
On 23 October 1086, an Almoravid-led force defeated Alfonso VI at the Battle of Sagrajas (also called Zallāqah), near Badajoz. The victory checked immediate Christian momentum and boosted Almoravid prestige in al-Andalus. It also raised the question of whether the taifas could remain independent while relying on Almoravid armies.
By 1090, the Almoravids shifted from intervention to takeover, removing taifa rulers and installing Almoravid control. This change reflected a claim that taifa leaders were too divided to defend Islam in Iberia effectively. The process marked the beginning of the end of the first taifa period as independent states.
Seville’s taifa ended in 1091, and the Abbadid ruler al-Muʿtamid was removed as Almoravid authority replaced the local dynasty. With Seville absorbed, Almoravid control spread across much of southern al-Andalus. The fall of such a major taifa signaled that independence was no longer sustainable for most taifa courts.
In 1091 the Almoravids moved against Seville, one of the strongest taifas. During the campaign, Almoravid forces defeated an attempted relief effort at the Battle of Almodóvar del Río (June 1091). The defeat helped isolate Seville and showed that even large taifas could not reliably combine forces against the new North African power.
By 1091, the Almoravids had largely dissolved the taifa system and brought much of al-Andalus under centralized rule from a North African dynasty. This ended the 1031–1091 phase of fragmentation, replacing many competing kingdoms with a more unified political structure. The outcome reshaped the Reconquista era by changing the main Muslim opponent from taifas to a single, stronger imperial power.
Taifa kingdoms and the fragmentation of al-Andalus (1031–1091)
