King Edward the Confessor died without a direct heir, creating a contested succession. Harold Godwinson was chosen and crowned quickly, but rivals—especially William, duke of Normandy, and Harald Hardrada of Norway—also claimed a right to rule. This succession crisis set the stage for the invasions of 1066.
On the approach to York, Norwegian king Harald Hardrada and his ally Tostig defeated the northern English earls Edwin and Morcar at Fulford. The loss opened the way to York and forced Harold II to march north to meet the invasion. This northern crisis helped shape the rushed, exhausting campaign that followed.
Harold II defeated Hardrada’s army at Stamford Bridge near York, and both Hardrada and Tostig were killed. Although this removed the Viking threat, Harold’s army was worn down by long marches and heavy fighting. Within days, he faced a new invasion in the south.
William, duke of Normandy, landed on the Sussex coast at Pevensey, bringing an invasion force aimed at taking the English throne. The landing was a turning point: it forced Harold to rush his tired army back south. William also began securing the area to support a major battle for control of England.
At Hastings, William’s Norman army defeated Harold II’s English army, and Harold was killed in the fighting. This battle broke the leadership of the English defense and made William the strongest claimant in practice. Hastings is widely treated as the decisive military turning point of the Norman Conquest.
After Harold’s death, leading English nobles proposed the young Edgar Ætheling as king, but he was never crowned and lacked the military power to stop William. His brief “uncrowned” claim shows the collapse of organized English resistance at the center. It also created pressure for a negotiated submission.
William was crowned king in Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day, marking his formal takeover of the English monarchy. The coronation did not end opposition, but it gave William a powerful legal and religious claim to rule. From this point, Norman control expanded through force, negotiation, and new administration.
In response to major unrest in northern England, William carried out campaigns in the winter of 1069–1070 that devastated large areas, especially around Yorkshire. Chroniclers describe widespread burning, looting, and famine as the region was forcibly subdued. The Harrying helped William secure the north but at a severe human cost.
A final serious center of resistance formed around the Isle of Ely in the East Anglian fens, associated with Hereward the Wake and other rebels. By 1071, Norman forces had defeated this resistance, removing a key refuge for opposition. The fall of Ely marked the end of the most sustained armed resistance to William’s rule.
At Christmas 1085, William ordered a kingdom-wide survey of landholding and value—later known as Domesday Book. The survey aimed to record who held land, what it was worth, and what was owed to the crown, strengthening royal control and tax collection. It also captured how landownership had changed since 1066.
The Domesday inquest was carried out in 1086, and its results were written up into what became Domesday Book. It was not a population census; it mainly recorded landholders, resources, and values for taxation and administration. Domesday became a lasting record of the new Norman land settlement after the conquest.
William I died at the priory of St Gervais near Rouen on 9 September 1087 after a final campaign in France. His death closed the period covered by the Norman Conquest timeline (1066–1087), leaving a transformed English kingdom with a Norman ruling elite and new systems of landholding and governance. Succession passed to his son William II in England.
