An anti-dissolution protest erupted at Louth in Lincolnshire, triggered by local fears over church property and royal religious policy. This outbreak became the immediate precursor that helped spark wider northern rebellion later in October.
Rebels marched on Lincoln and occupied the cathedral, pressing demands that included halting monastic dissolutions and reversing religious changes. The scale of the occupation showed that resistance was not confined to a single town.
In Yorkshire, Robert Aske emerged as a principal organizer and leader, helping turn scattered protests into a coordinated movement framed as a religious and political “pilgrimage.” The rebellion quickly widened beyond local grievances.
A formal oath—later attributed by Aske to his own drafting—was administered to bind participants to the movement’s stated aims and leadership. This helped discipline the rebel coalition and present it as loyalist reform rather than simple revolt.
Henry VIII refused to negotiate with armed rebels and ordered dispersal while royal forces mobilized. The Lincolnshire rising rapidly lost momentum and collapsed later in October, but it had already encouraged unrest farther north.
Pontefract Castle—strategically important in Yorkshire—was surrendered to the rebels by Lord Darcy, giving the insurgents a major stronghold and a political center for councils and negotiations.
A rebel force succeeded in taking control of Hull around 19–20 October, demonstrating the movement’s reach into major towns and ports. Control of Hull raised the stakes for the Crown by threatening an important strategic and supply point.
Royal forces under the Duke of Norfolk confronted the rebels at Doncaster Bridge. Norfolk opened negotiations and agreed a truce while messengers carried grievances to the king—an interval that bought the government time to strengthen its position.
At a council at Pontefract, the rebels compiled formal demands (the Pontefract Articles), including restoration of papal authority and a parliament free from royal manipulation. The articles became the movement’s most explicit political program.
Norfolk offered a general pardon and made non-committal promises in response to the rebels’ articles. Many insurgents, trusting the negotiations, agreed to disperse—an outcome that allowed the Crown to deal with leaders later at advantage.
A large assembly at Pontefract heard the king’s pardon read out, after which the remaining organized rebel force dispersed. The end of mass mobilization marked a turning point from open rebellion to pursuit and prosecution of participants.
Renewed resistance broke out in January 1537, led by Sir Francis Bigod, partly fueled by frustration that earlier promises had not been fulfilled. The revolt drew limited support and provided the Crown a pretext for harsh, piecemeal repression.
Government forces captured or dispersed Bigod’s supporters by early February, bringing the renewed uprising to an end. The failure undermined any remaining hope for negotiated settlement and accelerated prosecutions of prominent figures.
Sir Francis Bigod was executed in London after the collapse of the January rising. His death symbolized the Crown’s shift from negotiation to exemplary punishment following the 1536–1537 northern rebellions.
Thomas Darcy, implicated in surrendering Pontefract Castle and supporting the Pilgrimage of Grace, was executed after conviction for high treason. Executing a magnate signaled that rank would not shield rebel leadership.
Sir Robert Constable, a key Yorkshire participant who had submitted earlier, was executed at Hull. His execution underscored the government’s determination to eliminate local leadership networks that had made mass mobilization possible.
Robert Aske, the most prominent leader of the Pilgrimage of Grace, was executed at York. His death marked the definitive end of the movement’s leadership and consolidated the Crown’s victory over the northern uprisings.
