After Henry III died, leading English nobles swore loyalty to Edward I, marking the start of his reign. Edward inherited ongoing tensions along the Welsh border, where the princes of Gwynedd had expanded their power in earlier decades. His accession set the political and military context for later wars in Wales.
In 1276–1277, Edward I launched a major campaign against Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the leading Welsh prince, to force him into submission. The war demonstrated Edward’s ability to combine land forces with coastal shipping to pressure Gwynedd. This first conflict set a pattern for using military force to reshape Welsh politics.
Edward’s 1277 victory led to the Treaty of Aberconwy, which sharply reduced Llywelyn ap Gruffudd’s lands and influence. The agreement temporarily restored peace but left many disputes unresolved, especially over governance and land rights. These tensions helped make renewed war likely.
In March 1282, Dafydd ap Gruffudd—Llywelyn’s brother—triggered a wider revolt against English rule by attacking English-held positions, helping restart full-scale war. Llywelyn soon joined the rebellion, turning a local uprising into a national conflict. The fighting escalated beyond what the 1277 treaty could contain.
Llywelyn was killed in battle on 11 December 1282, removing the best-known leader of Welsh resistance. His death was a major turning point because it weakened coordination among Welsh forces and undermined the legitimacy of continued war. Edward’s campaign could now focus on capturing remaining leaders and strongholds.
Edward began replacing earlier fortifications with a new stone castle and planned town at Caernarfon in 1283. This was part of a broader strategy: strong coastal fortresses supported by sea supply, tied to new English-administered towns. The building program made conquest harder to reverse by embedding English military and administrative power in the landscape.
After continued fighting into 1283, Dafydd ap Gruffudd was captured and executed in October 1283. With the last major prince of Gwynedd removed, organized resistance to Edward’s conquest was badly disrupted. This helped Edward move from wartime conquest to long-term governance in Wales.
In 1284, Edward issued the Statute of Rhuddlan, a royal ordinance that reorganized large parts of Wales under English-style administration, including new shires. Welsh law and custom were not entirely removed, but the new framework placed key powers—courts, officials, and enforcement—under the English Crown. This statute marked a shift from conquest by armies to rule through institutions.
Edward I’s son—later Edward II—was born at Caernarfon Castle in 1284 while the king’s new fortifications were being developed in north Wales. The birth became politically symbolic because it linked the royal family to the conquered region. In later years, Edward I used titles and ceremonies to reinforce that Wales was now under his dynasty.
Despite conquest, resistance continued: Rhys ap Maredudd began a revolt in June 1287, driven in part by grievances against royal officials and administration. Royal forces eventually captured key castles linked to the rising, and the rebellion was crushed. The revolt showed that the new system imposed after 1284 could still spark violent pushback.
On 29 September 1294, coordinated attacks broke out across Wales, led in the north by Madog ap Llywelyn. Sources link the uprising to resentment over taxation and the actions of royal administrators. The scale of the revolt showed that conquest and legal reorganization had not ended Welsh opposition to English rule.
At the Battle of Maes Moydog on 5 March 1295, English forces defeated Madog ap Llywelyn’s army in Powys. The battle mattered because it broke the revolt’s momentum in the north and forced Madog into flight, reducing coordination among rebels. Although resistance continued, this defeat helped the Crown regain control.
In 1295, Edward began building Beaumaris Castle on Anglesey, widely described as a response to the recent revolt and part of strengthening the coastal fortress network. Its design aimed to make English control more secure by protecting key routes and resources near Snowdonia and the Irish Sea. This expanded building program reflects a long-term strategy: prevent future rebellions by permanent military infrastructure.
In 1301, Edward I formally granted his son Edward the title Prince of Wales. The investiture turned a once-Welsh princely title into a tool of English royal authority and succession. It signaled that control of Wales was intended to be permanent and tied to the English crown’s heir.
Edward I died on 7 July 1307 while on campaign against Scotland. By this point, Wales had been militarily defeated, reorganized through the Statute of Rhuddlan, and increasingly secured by major castles and new fortified towns. His death closed the main phase of conquest and consolidation, leaving his successors to govern Wales within the structures he created.
