In 634, Silla built the stone pagoda at Bunhwangsa in Gyeongju under Queen Seondeok. It shows an early move toward long-lasting stone-and-granite construction and large public Buddhist monuments. This set a foundation for the later Unified Silla “granite age” of sculpture and architecture centered in Gyeongju.
By 668, Silla had defeated its rival kingdoms and entered the Unified Silla era (668–935). With Gyeongju as the capital, state support for Buddhism helped temples, pagodas, and stone images become central to public life. This political stability and patronage created the conditions for Gyeongju’s best-known artistic output.
In 682, the state temple Gameunsa (Kamŭnsa) was completed near Gyeongju, with two prominent three-story stone pagodas. The site reflects how the Unified Silla court used Buddhist architecture to express political legitimacy and protection for the kingdom. Its durable stone monuments also preview the major building programs of the 700s.
A major set of Buddhist statues from the Gamsan Temple site is dated to 721, showing a shift toward softer, more natural-looking forms. These works are often treated as “stepping stones” leading to the mature carving style of mid-8th-century Gyeongju. They help document how Unified Silla artists adapted Tang-era influences into local stone sculpture.
In the mid-700s, Unified Silla elites backed major religious building projects tied to Gyeongju’s landscape, including Bulguksa and nearby Seokguram. These projects combined architecture, sculpture, and site planning to create a carefully staged sacred environment. Together they became a key reference point for later Korean Buddhist art and design.
Dabotap, an ornate stone pagoda at Bulguksa, is commonly dated to 751. Its complex geometry and carved detail stand out from simpler pagoda designs, showing the range of Unified Silla stoneworking. Placed across the courtyard from Seokgatap, it also helped turn temple space into a planned visual and ritual experience.
Seokgatap, the paired three-story stone pagoda at Bulguksa, is usually dated to around 751. Its restrained form emphasizes proportion and balance rather than ornament, contrasting with Dabotap nearby. Together, the two pagodas show how Unified Silla builders used different artistic approaches within a single planned courtyard.
In 771, the Sacred Bell of Great King Seongdeok (also known as the Emille Bell) was cast and later became one of Korea’s best-known bronze works. It represents the technical skill and design traditions of Unified Silla metalworking, including inscription, relief decoration, and acoustic design. The bell is now housed at the Gyeongju National Museum.
UNESCO describes Bulguksa as built in 774, and the Seokguram grotto as part of the same 8th-century religious complex. Their completion reflects a high point of state-supported Buddhist art around Gyeongju, bringing together monumental architecture and sculpture. Seokguram’s carved figures are widely recognized as a masterpiece of East Asian Buddhist art.
From the later 700s into the 800s, sources note signs of stylistic “mannerism” and practical constraints, including reduced statue sizes and increased use of iron for larger images. These changes reflect both artistic trends and resource limits as Unified Silla entered a period of political and economic strain. Even so, Gyeongju remained a major center for Buddhist production and preservation.
From the late 800s into the early 900s, large rebellions and rival states emerged, starting the Later Three Kingdoms period (often dated from about 889 or 892). As the Unified Silla court weakened, the scale and certainty of centralized building programs declined. This transition helps explain why Gyeongju’s major “golden age” monuments largely cluster in the 7th–8th centuries.
In 935, the last Silla king (Gyeongsun) surrendered to the rising Goryeo state, ending Unified Silla. Gyeongju’s role shifted from living capital to historic city, but its temples, pagodas, and stone images remained as physical evidence of earlier artistic priorities. The legacy of this era is now recognized internationally through protected heritage zones in and around Gyeongju.
