King Beopheung (r. 514–540) is traditionally associated with promulgating a state law code (520), a key step in formalizing Silla’s centralized governance; later scholarship often links the legal codification of hereditary rank distinctions to this reform era.
In 531, Silla established the post of sangdaedeung, the highest aristocratic office and head of the Hwabaek (Council of Nobles). The office institutionalized elite (true-bone) influence within the aristocratic government.
With no eligible male heir, Queen Seondeok (r. 632–647) took the throne—an outcome shaped by bone-rank rules that originally limited royal succession to the sacred-bone (seonggol) stratum.
After Queen Jindeok (r. 647–654), the sacred-bone line no longer produced monarchs; Silla’s kingship shifted to the true-bone (jingol) rank, marking a major change in aristocratic legitimacy.
Kim Chunchu became King Muyeol (r. 654–661), the first monarch commonly identified with true-bone status after the end of sacred-bone succession, re-centering royal authority within a narrower aristocratic pool.
Silla’s conquest of Goguryeo (668) is conventionally used to mark the start of Unified Silla (668–935). Governing an enlarged realm increased the importance of aristocratic ordering—bone-rank remained central to structuring eligibility for office and elite privilege.
Soon after King Sinmun’s accession, the 681 revolt associated with Kim Heum-dol was suppressed; the episode is commonly read as an aristocratic backlash amid efforts to strengthen central authority over entrenched elite power networks.
In 689, King Sinmun issued an edict eliminating nogeup (stipend villages) and replacing it with jikjeon (office land) arrangements—an attempt to weaken aristocrats’ local economic bases that underpinned bone-rank elite dominance.
In 788, King Wonseong established a national civil service examination modeled on Tang practice. While bone-rank constraints still limited top advancement, the exam reflected ongoing efforts to systematize recruitment and administrative norms in an aristocratic state.
In 822, Kim Heonchang, a true-bone aristocrat descended from King Muyeol’s line, led a major rebellion—an example of lineage conflict and weakening central control within the aristocratic political order of late Unified Silla.
In 935, the last Silla monarch, King Gyeongsun, abdicated and submitted to Taejo of Goryeo, ending Silla as an independent kingdom; Goryeo is generally understood to have abolished Silla’s bone-rank order as it consolidated a new bureaucratic elite.
The Samguk sagi (completed 1145) became the earliest surviving Korean chronicle and a key later source for bone-rank-era institutions, including rank/office systems and sumptuary-style regulations discussed in its monographs.
