In the mid-3rd century BCE, Arsaces I, leader of the Parni, established the Arsacid dynasty in the region of Parthia in northeastern Iran. This marks the conventional starting point for the Parthian (Arsacid) Empire’s long rule, even though early control was initially limited and later expanded.
Under Mithridates I, Parthia moved from a regional kingdom to a major imperial power. His reign saw large conquests across the Iranian plateau and into Mesopotamia, weakening Seleucid control and setting up Parthia as a long-term rival to western powers.
In the early 140s BCE, Parthian forces took Seleucia on the Tigris, a major Seleucid-era city and commercial center. Across the river they developed Ctesiphon as a military and administrative hub that later became a key Parthian capital, anchoring Parthian power in Mesopotamia.
Over time, Ctesiphon grew from a garrison settlement into a major political center. By the 1st century BCE it was functioning as a principal royal residence and capital area, reflecting Parthia’s focus on governing Mesopotamia and managing frontier pressures from the west.
In 53 BCE, the Parthians destroyed a major Roman army led by Marcus Licinius Crassus near Carrhae (modern Harran). Parthian cavalry tactics—horse archers and armored cataphracts—proved decisive, shaping Roman strategy and confirming Parthia as a powerful western rival.
In 63 CE, Rome and Parthia ended a major conflict over Armenia with the Treaty of Rhandeia. The settlement accepted an Arsacid prince on Armenia’s throne, while recognizing a Roman role in confirmation, creating a workable compromise for managing a contested borderland.
In 116 CE, Roman emperor Trajan captured Ctesiphon during his campaign against Parthia. Although the occupation did not last, it showed that Parthia’s capital region could be reached and taken in a major Roman offensive, raising the stakes of future frontier wars.
During the Roman–Parthian War of 161–166, Roman forces campaigned deep into Mesopotamia and captured Ctesiphon in 165. The attack damaged Parthian prestige and infrastructure, but Rome still did not hold the region permanently, leaving Parthia weakened yet intact.
In 198 CE, Roman emperor Septimius Severus again captured and sacked Ctesiphon. The repeated loss of the capital area underscored Parthia’s growing internal and external pressures, and the deportations show the conflict’s direct human cost.
In the early 200s CE, a succession crisis split Parthian authority between rival claimants, including Vologases VI and his brother Artabanus. This internal conflict weakened the empire’s ability to respond to threats, especially as regional rulers in Iran gained strength.
In 217 CE, Artabanus defeated the Romans under Emperor Macrinus at Nisibis, forcing Rome to negotiate peace and pay heavily. Even with this battlefield success, Parthia remained strained by internal rivalry and the growing challenge from Persis in southern Iran.
On 28 April 224 CE, Ardashir (founder of the Sasanian dynasty) defeated and killed Artabanus in the Battle of Hormozdgan. This victory ended nearly five centuries of Arsacid rule and began a new, more centralized Sasanian Empire that replaced Parthia as Iran’s dominant power.
