In 1501, Ismail I captured Tabriz and proclaimed himself shah, launching the Safavid dynasty as a new ruling power in Iran. This move also signaled a major religious and political shift, as the Safavid state promoted Twelver Shiʿism as a central part of its identity. The new dynasty quickly moved from a Sufi-based movement into an imperial government.
On 17 July 1501, Safavid forces defeated the Aq Qoyunlu at the Battle of Sharur. The victory helped secure Azerbaijan and opened the way for Safavid consolidation in northwestern Iran. It also showed how Ismail’s tribal military supporters could defeat larger rival armies in open battle.
On 23 August 1514, the Ottomans defeated the Safavids at the Battle of Chaldiran, using artillery and firearms more effectively. The loss slowed Safavid expansion to the west and began a long struggle over frontier regions like eastern Anatolia and Iraq. It also pressured later Safavid rulers to rethink military organization and defensive strategy.
In 1524, Tahmasp I became shah after Ismail I’s death, inheriting a state shaped by rivalry with the Ottoman Empire. Early in his reign, powerful Qizilbash leaders often dominated politics, making central rule difficult. Over time, Tahmasp worked to strengthen royal authority while managing repeated Ottoman and Uzbek threats.
On 29 May 1555, the Peace of Amasya ended a major phase of Ottoman–Safavid warfare and created a recognized border between the two empires. The agreement brought a period of relative stability and clarified control in parts of the Caucasus and Iraq. This was one of the first long-lasting diplomatic settlements in their century-long rivalry.
In 1588, Abbas I took the throne during a period of military and political crisis. He is widely known for strengthening central authority and pushing back against rival powers, especially the Ottomans and Uzbeks. His reign became a turning point that reoriented the empire toward more stable administration and long-term recovery.
On 21 March 1590, the Treaty of Constantinople ended the Ottoman–Safavid War of 1578–1590 on terms favorable to the Ottomans. The Safavids ceded significant territory in the Caucasus and parts of western Iran. The treaty highlighted Safavid weakness at the time and set the stage for later recovery efforts under Shah Abbas I.
In 1598, Abbas I moved the Safavid capital from Qazvin to Isfahan, farther from unstable frontiers and closer to major trade routes. Isfahan was redesigned with large public spaces and monumental architecture to project imperial power. The move helped link government, commerce, and culture into a more centralized Safavid state.
On 21 October 1603, Abbas I’s forces recaptured Tabriz, reversing one of the empire’s earlier strategic losses. The victory launched a renewed Safavid offensive in the northwest and helped rebuild confidence in the dynasty’s military leadership. It also showed how reforms and better timing could offset Ottoman advantages.
From February to April 1622, Safavid forces with help from the English East India Company captured the Portuguese fortress on Hormuz. Removing Portugal from this key island shifted regional power in the Persian Gulf and strengthened Safavid access to maritime trade. It also reflected Abbas I’s policy of using selective foreign partnerships to serve Safavid goals.
On 17 May 1639, the Treaty of Zuhab ended the Ottoman–Safavid War of 1623–1639. It confirmed territorial divisions, including Ottoman control of much of Iraq, while Safavid influence remained strong in parts of the Caucasus. The treaty helped stabilize the western frontier for generations, even as Safavid power slowly weakened in later decades.
In 1722, Afghan forces captured Isfahan, the Safavid capital, after a major campaign that exposed the empire’s internal weakness. The fall of the capital marked the collapse of effective Safavid authority across Iran and triggered a period of fragmentation and competing claimants. Even where Safavid titles survived, real power shifted away from the dynasty.
By 1736, military leader Nader Khan removed the Safavid figurehead Abbas III and took the throne for himself as Nader Shah. This change formalized what years of crisis had already made clear: the Safavid state could not be restored as it had been. The Safavid era ended with a new ruling house and a different balance of power in Iran and the region.
