UN mediator Count Folke Bernadotte was assassinated in Jerusalem by members of Lehi. The killing triggered a major state crackdown and became a turning point in ending independent underground activity, particularly in Jerusalem.
In the immediate aftermath of Bernadotte’s assassination, the Israeli government moved to arrest Lehi members and seize arms and bases, while pursuing legal measures to outlaw/curb terrorist organizations—pressing remaining underground groups toward dissolution or absorption.
Following the Bernadotte crisis, the government issued an ultimatum to Irgun forces in Jerusalem to accept state military law, enlist in the IDF, and hand over weapons—effectively ending Irgun’s last significant independent armed presence inside Israel.
After the Altalena Affair and the subsequent Jerusalem ultimatum, Irgun’s remaining structures were wound down; the organization formally disbanded in the diaspora, marking the endpoint of Irgun as a separate paramilitary force and consolidating manpower into the IDF (with political activity continuing via successor movements).
Former Lehi figures organized the Fighters’ List and won representation in Israel’s first Knesset election, illustrating how segments of the underground transitioned from armed activity into formal political participation after disbandment and integration pressures.
Yaakov Dori completed his term as the IDF’s first Chief of the General Staff, and Yigael Yadin succeeded him—part of the early institutionalization of a professional general staff after the integration of pre-state forces.
