In early 1947, the British government decided it could no longer manage the growing conflict in Mandatory Palestine. Britain asked the newly formed United Nations to recommend a solution, moving the issue from imperial rule into international diplomacy.
The UN created the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) to investigate conditions and propose future governance. In September 1947, UNSCOP’s majority recommended partition into separate Jewish and Arab states, with Jerusalem under an international regime.
On November 29, 1947, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 181 recommending partition of Mandatory Palestine into independent Arab and Jewish states, linked by an economic union, and a special international status for Jerusalem. Jewish leaders accepted the plan in principle, while Arab leaders rejected it, and tensions escalated quickly.
The day after the UN partition vote, violence between Jewish and Arab communities intensified into a civil war phase. Fighting included ambushes, reprisals, and attacks on transport routes, undermining security as Britain prepared to withdraw.
In April 1948, Jewish forces began a major offensive (Operation Nachshon) to break the blockade of the Tel Aviv–Jerusalem road and resupply Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem. The operation marked a shift toward larger, coordinated offensives during the final weeks of the Mandate.
On April 9, 1948, Irgun and Lehi forces attacked Deir Yassin near Jerusalem, killing over 100 Palestinian villagers according to many historical accounts. News of the killings spread widely and became one factor that increased panic, displacement, and hardening attitudes during the war.
On April 13, 1948, an ambush struck a convoy traveling to Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem. Dozens were killed, including medical staff and others, deepening the cycle of retaliation and showing how even medical and supply routes had become targets.
Britain terminated its responsibility for governing Palestine at midnight on May 14, 1948. The end of the Mandate removed the main governing authority and created a power vacuum as competing forces moved to establish control.
On May 14, 1948, Jewish leaders led by David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel in Tel Aviv, shortly before the Mandate expired. The declaration aimed to create a sovereign state and set out core claims and principles for the new government.
Following the declaration of Israel’s independence, neighboring Arab states sent forces into the former Mandate territory, transforming the civil conflict into a broader interstate war. This phase shaped new front lines and expanded the scale of fighting and displacement.
In late May 1948, Count Folke Bernadotte accepted appointment as the UN’s mediator in the conflict, the first mediator in UN history. His work focused on negotiating ceasefires and addressing humanitarian issues, including the growing refugee crisis.
On May 29, 1948, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 50 calling for a four-week cessation of armed force and restrictions on moving troops and weapons into the region. The resolution aimed to slow the fighting and support UN mediation efforts.
In July 1948, Israeli forces launched Operation Dani, capturing Lydda (Lod), Ramle, and nearby villages while failing to take Latrun. The fighting contributed to large-scale civilian displacement and helped shape Israel’s control over the central corridor.
On September 17, 1948, UN mediator Folke Bernadotte was assassinated in Jerusalem while on official duty. His killing disrupted mediation and underscored the intensity of political conflict surrounding the war’s possible outcomes.
On December 11, 1948, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 194, establishing a UN Conciliation Commission and setting out principles for a final settlement. The resolution included a widely debated provision addressing Palestinian refugees and compensation, becoming a central reference point in later diplomacy.
From late December 1948 into early January 1949, Israel carried out Operation Horev against Egyptian forces in and near the Gaza Strip. The fighting helped push the conflict toward armistice negotiations, even though it did not produce a final peace treaty.
On February 24, 1949, Israel and Egypt signed an armistice agreement as UN-mediated talks progressed. This was the first of several armistices that stopped major fighting and began defining the postwar ceasefire lines.
On April 3, 1949, Israel and Jordan signed an armistice agreement. The armistice lines, later commonly called the "Green Line," became the key ceasefire boundaries between Israel and neighboring Arab-controlled territories until 1967.
On May 11, 1949, the UN General Assembly voted to admit Israel as a member state through Resolution 273. Admission marked a key step in Israel’s international standing after the war, even as regional disputes and the refugee question continued.
On July 20, 1949, Israel and Syria signed the last of the 1949 armistice agreements. This formally ended the main hostilities of the 1948 war, while leaving many political issues unresolved.
