The Ottoman Nationality Law set rules for who counted as an Ottoman subject, including by parentage and by birth on Ottoman territory under certain conditions. It also described how foreigners could naturalize and how Ottomans might lose or retain status after taking another nationality. The law mattered because it tried to make membership in the state more uniform and legally defined.
The Kanûn-ı Esâsî was proclaimed as the Ottoman Empire’s first constitution. It created a constitutional framework that included a parliament, while still granting major powers to the sultan.
