Norse sailors reached the northern tip of Newfoundland and built a small base at what is now L’Anse aux Meadows. Archaeological dating shows Norse activity there in 1021, proving Europeans crossed the Atlantic to North America long before later voyages from England, Portugal, and France. The site was used briefly and then abandoned, leaving no lasting colony in the region.
Sailing for England in the ship Matthew, John Cabot made landfall in North America on June 24, 1497. The exact location is debated (often suggested as Newfoundland, Labrador, or Cape Breton), but the voyage helped establish an English claim and encouraged more Atlantic crossings. It also signaled to Europeans that rich fishing grounds and new routes might exist in the northwest Atlantic.
Portuguese explorer Gaspar Corte-Real sailed west and, on a later voyage, reached the Labrador region in 1501. Accounts describe him capturing Indigenous people and taking captives back toward Portugal, showing that early exploration could include violence and enslavement, not just mapping. These voyages helped widen European knowledge of the North Atlantic coast and increased competition for access to resources.
In the 1530s, Basque mariners created a major seasonal whaling base at Red Bay (Labrador) to hunt whales and render oil for shipment to Europe. Archaeological remains show an organized, large-scale industry: shore stations, ovens for melting blubber, cooperages for barrels, and shipwrecks. This was an early example of sustained European commercial activity on Canadian coasts, even without permanent settlement.
Jacques Cartier left Saint-Malo on April 20, 1534, beginning France’s major push to explore the Canadian Atlantic and St. Lawrence region. He entered the Strait of Belle Isle and surveyed coasts around Newfoundland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The voyage set the stage for later French claims and for using the St. Lawrence as a gateway to the interior.
On July 24, 1534, Cartier’s party erected a large cross near Gaspé as a public sign of French claim. For France, this was a symbolic act of taking possession; for local Indigenous communities, it marked a serious shift in what Europeans intended to do on the coast. The event became one of the best-known early moments of French territorial claiming in the region.
In 1576, Martin Frobisher entered waters around Baffin Island while searching for a Northwest Passage to Asia. He mapped parts of what he thought might be a strait leading west (now linked to Frobisher Bay) and encountered Inuit communities. These voyages expanded European geographic knowledge of the Canadian Arctic coast and showed how hard northern exploration could be.
In August 1583, Sir Humphrey Gilbert arrived at St. John’s and formally claimed Newfoundland for the English Crown. The act was mostly a legal and symbolic claim rather than a lasting settlement, but it reflected growing competition among European powers along Atlantic coasts. It also showed that fishing ports and seasonal fleets were already active and internationally mixed.
Around 1600, Pierre de Chauvin set up a fur-trading post at Tadoussac, creating one of the earliest sustained European trading footholds in the St. Lawrence area. The post linked coastal access to inland networks that supplied valuable pelts, especially beaver. It helped shift exploration from short visits to repeated, organized seasonal operations.
In 1603, Samuel de Champlain was involved in diplomatic and trading efforts near Tadoussac, where the French sought alliances with Indigenous nations. These relationships were crucial for survival, travel knowledge, and access to the fur trade. This marked a turning point from exploration-only voyages toward long-term planning for settlement along the St. Lawrence.
Henry IV supported Pierre Dugua, sieur de Monts, with authority and a fur-trade monopoly to help finance French settlement efforts in Acadia and nearby regions. In 1604, de Monts led settlers across the Atlantic, including Champlain, tying exploration directly to colonization plans. This approach aimed to fund permanent presence through controlled trade rather than one-time expeditions.
On July 3, 1608, Samuel de Champlain began building a fortified settlement at Québec, creating a durable French base on the St. Lawrence River. Québec became a key center for administration, diplomacy, and trade in what would be called New France. Its founding is often treated as the endpoint of “early exploration” on these coasts because it marked a shift from coastal reconnaissance to permanent colonial infrastructure.
