By the late 1600s, New Spain’s government and church commonly described society through a “two republics” idea: a república de españoles and a república de indios. In daily life, however, growing intermarriage and slavery-created mixing did not fit neatly into those categories. This tension set the stage for both everyday racial labeling and later visual systems like casta painting.
Around 1700, words like mestizo, mulato, and many local variants were widely used in parish, notarial, and court records to describe people’s “quality” (calidad). These terms could affect taxes, military obligations, and access to offices, but they were also flexible and contested. The growing paper trail of racial categories helped make racial “classification” feel more official.
Painter Manuel de Arellano created a pair of works around 1710 that depicted racial “types,” using a portrait-like format usually reserved for elites. LACMA describes these works as groundbreaking precursors to the later casta genre. They show how artists began translating social classification into images even before the standard multi-scene casta series became common.
Some of the earliest identified casta paintings are associated with Juan Rodríguez Juárez and a commission connected to Viceroy Fernando de Alencastre (Duke of Linares). This points to elite interest in organizing and displaying racial categories, not just describing them. Early patronage helped establish casta painting as a recognized, repeatable genre.
Over the 1700s, casta paintings increasingly followed a standard “series” format, often presenting multiple scenes of couples and their children with labels naming each “casta.” These images also included clothing, foods, and occupations, linking race to status and everyday life. Museums and scholars emphasize that the paintings were idealized and did not capture the full complexity of real identities.
Mid-century New Spanish elites and officials increasingly valued classification—of nature, people, and society—ideas linked to broader Enlightenment and Bourbon-era reforms. Casta paintings fit this mindset by presenting a tidy, teachable “map” of mixture and hierarchy. The genre worked as a visual argument about order, not just a record of families.
In 1763, leading painter Miguel Cabrera produced a signed and dated series of casta paintings (individual canvases include labels such as “De español y mestiza, castiza”). The series is a key reference point because its date is secure and its style became influential. It also shows how prominent artists treated casta painting as a major, collectible secular genre.
Around the 1770s, some casta series went beyond labeling mixtures and attached moral judgments to specific “castas.” This shift mattered because it strengthened the idea that race predicted character and behavior. It also shows how casta painting could support social prejudice, not only describe difference.
In 1774, Andrés de Islas produced a casta series (with works now associated with the Museo de América collections) that follows the familiar multi-canvas structure. Like many sets, it included scenes that framed some Indigenous people as “barbarous” outsiders, often placed at the end of the sequence. The set shows how casta painting could reinforce colonial boundaries as well as describe mixing.
On 1776-03-23, the Spanish Crown issued the Royal Pragmatic on Marriage, requiring parental consent and giving families legal tools to object to marriages seen as socially unequal. While not a “race law” in a simple sense, it became a mechanism through which status—often linked to race—could be contested in court. The policy context matched casta paintings’ interest in controlling mixture and hierarchy.
In 1778, the Crown extended the marriage policy to Spanish America, aiming to standardize control over family formation and inheritance across the empire. This mattered in New Spain because marriage choices were one of the main ways social rank and “calidad” were negotiated. The growing legal scrutiny of “unequal” unions fit the same world that made casta series meaningful to elites.
In 1795, the Crown instituted gracias al sacar, a legal mechanism that allowed some people of mixed ancestry to petition for an official change in racial classification. This policy shows that racial categories were not only cultural labels but could be negotiated through money, paperwork, and royal authority. It also helps explain why casta paintings’ neat categories could coexist with real-world flexibility.
After 1810, the outbreak of the Mexican War of Independence began undermining the institutions that had supported colonial hierarchy, including the social and legal weight of caste labeling. As authority fractured, elite projects to “order” society through images and categories became less central. The casta genre’s audience and purpose started to fade under wartime upheaval.
In 1821, Mexico achieved independence, and legal racial caste designations were repudiated in the new nation. Scholarly overviews note that casta painting as a colonial genre largely stopped after independence, even though later art sometimes reused similar stereotypes in different forms. This marks a clear endpoint: the genre’s core function—visualizing colonial racial hierarchy—no longer matched the new political order.
