Jesuit missionaries began working among the Tepehuán in what is now Durango as part of New Spain’s push to settle and control its northern frontier. Missions aimed to convert Indigenous communities and reorganize them into towns linked to Spanish rule. These efforts also brought new pressures, including labor demands and cultural conflict.
A large Indigenous uprising began in 1616 in Nueva Vizcaya, attacking Spanish settlements and mission sites. The conflict lasted until about 1620 and caused heavy loss of life, including missionaries, and widespread destruction. The revolt showed how fragile mission-frontier control could be when communities resisted colonial policies.
In 1617, Jesuit leadership in the region began major mission work among the Yaqui in Sonora. Over the following years, many Yaqui communities were reorganized into mission towns, which became centers for religious instruction and Spanish administration. This expansion strengthened New Spain’s presence along the northwest frontier.
Jesuit Andrés Pérez de Ribas published an influential history describing Jesuit mission work in northern New Spain. The book helped shape how later readers understood the goals and methods of frontier missions, and it preserved many details about Indigenous communities and colonial encounters. It also reflected the Jesuit viewpoint and priorities of its time.
In 1680, Pueblo communities in New Mexico organized a revolt that drove Spanish settlers and missionaries out for about 12 years. While this took place east of Sonora and Baja California, it influenced northern frontier thinking by showing that coercive religious and colonial policies could trigger coordinated resistance. Frontier officials and missionaries adjusted strategies in response to this risk.
Jesuit priest Eusebio Francisco Kino arrived in 1687 to begin establishing missions in the Pimería Alta (today parts of northern Sonora and southern Arizona). His work linked religious conversion with Spanish mapping, diplomacy, and settlement planning. Kino became a central figure in the Jesuit mission network along this frontier.
Kino founded Mission Nuestra Señora de los Dolores on March 13, 1687, near a Pima settlement in Sonora. It became a key base for further Jesuit expansion in the region and a model mission complex with agriculture and workshops. This mission helped anchor Spanish-Jesuit influence in the far north of New Spain.
On October 25, 1697, Jesuit Juan María de Salvatierra founded Mission Loreto (Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó). Loreto became the main base for Jesuit expansion across the Baja California peninsula. It also marked a turning point from repeated failed colonization attempts to a sustained mission-and-settlement strategy.
In 1728, Jesuits founded Mission San Ignacio at a productive oasis site in central Baja California. The mission’s agriculture supported further expansion into harder-to-reach areas and connected scattered communities through visitas (sub-mission stations). It became one of the peninsula’s best-known long-running mission centers.
In 1734, the Pericú Revolt began with attacks on southern Baja mission sites, including Mission Santiago, where the resident missionary was killed and buildings were sacked. The revolt lasted for years and exposed the depth of local opposition to mission rule and disruption. Rebuilding efforts followed, but the conflict weakened mission stability in the Cape Region.
In 1752, the Jesuits founded Mission Santa Gertrudis among the Cochimí, extending the mission chain into more remote interior areas. New missions often depended on outside funding and careful site selection for water and farming. This expansion was part of the late Jesuit push to consolidate the Baja frontier before political winds shifted.
In 1762, Jesuit Wenceslaus Linck founded Mission San Francisco Borja in what is now northern Baja California. The mission reflected how far the Jesuit network had spread along the peninsula by the mid-1700s. It also shows that mission building continued up to the final years before the Jesuits were removed from Spanish territory.
King Charles III issued orders to expel the Jesuits from Spain’s dominions in 1767, including New Spain. The expulsion abruptly removed the main administrators of many northern frontier missions and transferred their properties and responsibilities to other authorities. This decision reshaped mission life across Sonora and Baja California and ended the Jesuit era on the northern frontier.
In July 1767, royal orders were carried out in Sonora as officials moved to arrest and remove Jesuit missionaries from their mission towns. The operation was designed to be secret and coordinated, limiting resistance and ensuring control of mission assets. For Indigenous communities tied to the mission system, this sudden change meant new leadership and new policies.
In 1768, Franciscans led by Junípero Serra took charge of the former Jesuit missions in Baja California. This handover closed the 70-year period of Jesuit administration that began at Loreto in 1697 and shifted the peninsula’s mission policy into a new phase. The transition also set the stage for later expansions north into Alta California under different mission leadership.
After the Jesuits were expelled, Franciscans were assigned to take over mission work in Sonora. This marked a major administrative transition: the same communities and buildings continued, but with different personnel and often different priorities and resources. The change helped keep the mission system functioning while the Spanish state tightened control over the frontier.
