In 1535, the Casa de Moneda de México (Mexico City mint) was established to produce official coinage. Reliable coin production helped turn mined silver into standardized money that could be taxed, shipped, and traded across the Spanish empire. This made overland transport of bullion and coin between mines and Mexico City especially important.
In 1546, rich silver deposits were discovered near what became Zacatecas. Supplying and protecting these mines pushed Spanish authorities and settlers to intensify travel on inland routes north from Mexico City. These routes later became organized as the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (Royal Inland Road), a backbone for silver transport.
By the mid-1500s, New Spain’s miners adopted mercury-based refining methods (often called the patio process) that allowed lower-grade ores to be processed more efficiently. This raised the volume of silver that had to be moved—ore, mercury, supplies, and finished metal—along inland roads. As production grew, so did the need for organized pack-animal transport and secure convoy routines.
From the mid-16th century onward, the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro became a principal trade corridor for moving silver from mining regions such as Zacatecas, Guanajuato, and San Luis Potosí toward Mexico City. It also moved mercury and other inputs back to mining zones. Muleteer settlements, bridges, and roadside complexes grew up to support long-distance traffic and reduce travel risks.
In 1598, Juan de Oñate led an expedition north that helped establish and regularize the route between central New Spain and New Mexico. This pushed the Camino Real farther into frontier regions, making it a strategic corridor for moving people, supplies, and (indirectly) mining wealth through northern settlements. Over time, the road linked mining logistics with military and colonial administration.
As traffic increased, the Camino Real was reinforced by a network of estates (haciendas), bridges, and defensive sites that served travelers and protected cargo. This infrastructure lowered the costs and risks of long hauls, especially for high-value silver shipments. The system also helped create multi-ethnic towns and regional markets along the road.
In 1709, San Felipe el Real de Chihuahua (today Chihuahua City) was founded to support nearby mines and became a major commercial center on the road’s northern segments. This strengthened the road’s role as a supply-and-shipment corridor, not only a passageway. Northern traffic increasingly linked mining towns, ranching districts, and frontier garrisons into one overland system.
In the late 1700s, Guanajuato became one of the world’s leading silver-extraction centers. Rising output meant more frequent, higher-value shipments requiring dependable pack trains and coordinated security. Wealth from the mines also financed major construction, showing how silver transport connected mining profits to urban growth.
In 1772, silver discoveries at Real de Catorce added another important district to New Spain’s late-colonial mining expansion. New or expanding mining zones required pack animals, muleteers, food, tools, and mercury—moving along the same inland corridors used by older districts. This growth kept the Camino Real system and its mule-train logistics central to the colonial economy into the 1790s.
In 1777, the Spanish crown established the Real Cuerpo de Minería, a guild of mine owners, to reorganize the industry and support technological improvements. Better financing and regulation aimed to raise production, which in turn increased the need for reliable overland movement of silver and supplies. The guild’s central tribunal in Mexico City also linked mining districts more tightly to colonial governance.
In 1783, new mining ordinances (Ordenanzas de Minería) were approved under Charles III. These rules standardized how mines were owned, worked, taxed, and judged in mining disputes. Clearer rules helped stabilize investment and production, reinforcing the long-distance logistics system that carried silver through the Camino Real corridor.
In 1792, the Real Seminario de Minería opened in Mexico City to teach mining techniques and improve production. Training engineers and specialists was meant to make mining more efficient and profitable, which depended on steady access to inputs and dependable shipment of output. The school was part of a broader push to modernize New Spain’s silver economy.
By the late 1700s, the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro had functioned for centuries as the main overland “Silver Route,” tying mines, markets, and Mexico City together. Its roadside towns and service points made long-distance mule transport routine for precious metals and essential supplies. This period represents a mature system whose effectiveness depended on coordinated labor, regulation, and infrastructure.
Beginning in 1810, the outbreak of the Mexican War of Independence disrupted mining, trade, and overland security. Fighting and political instability reduced investment and made long-distance movement of silver riskier and less predictable. The result was a major break in the late-colonial system of regulated, high-volume mule transport along the Camino Real.
