In April 1565, Miguel López de Legazpi’s expedition reached Cebu and founded the first lasting Spanish settlement in the Philippine Islands. This created the political base Spain needed to attempt regular Pacific crossings tied to New Spain (Mexico). The settlement also made it urgent to find a dependable return route across the Pacific to supply and govern the new colony.
In 1565, navigator-friar Andrés de Urdaneta successfully charted the tornaviaje (return route) from the Philippines to New Spain by sailing north to catch favorable winds and currents. This solved the major technical problem of getting from Asia back to Mexico by sea. The discovery made a sustained Manila–Acapulco trade route possible.
In 1571, Legazpi established Manila, which became the capital of Spain’s Philippine colony and its main Pacific trading port. Manila’s position near established Asian trading networks helped it function as the collection point for Chinese silks and other Asian goods. This anchored the Asian end of the Manila–Acapulco galleon system.
On November 29, 1574, the pirate leader Limahong attacked Manila, showing how exposed the new colony and its commerce were to raids. Even though the Spanish and their allies repelled the assault, the episode highlighted the risk that a single captured or sunk ship could disrupt the colony’s economy. Defense and fortification became more urgent as the galleon trade grew.
By the late 1600s, Acapulco’s annual market season surged when the Manila galleon arrived, temporarily turning the port into a major commercial meeting place. A 1697 travel account describes rapid buying and selling, price spikes, and intense activity focused on unloading Asian goods. This “fair” illustrates how the galleon trade shaped local life in New Spain beyond the ship itself.
Over time, the Manila galleons became the primary link connecting Spain’s Philippine colony to New Spain, moving Asian luxury goods east and Mexican silver west. Because the route usually depended on one main annual round trip, losses at sea or captures could shock Manila’s economy. The system tied colonial finances and decision-making to the rhythm of a few high-stakes voyages.
In 1740, reforms associated with Spain’s Bourbon era began allowing navíos de registro (registered ships) in the Pacific—solo voyages outside the traditional galleon pattern. These ships could be more flexible and sometimes less vulnerable than a predictable convoy-style system. The change signaled that Spanish officials were experimenting with new ways to manage and defend Pacific trade.
On April 30, 1751, the large galleon Santísima Trinidad was launched for the Manila–Acapulco merchant route. Its size and armament reflect how valuable galleon cargoes were and how the ships were built to endure long voyages and potential attacks. Ships like this represented the mature, highly capitalized phase of the trade.
On October 30, 1762, during a wider Anglo-Spanish conflict, British naval forces captured the Manila galleon Santísima Trinidad near the Philippines. The incident showed that European wars could directly threaten the Pacific route and its high-value silver-and-goods shipments. It also reinforced how much depended on the safe passage of a small number of vessels.
In 1813, Spain’s Cortes of Cádiz decreed the suppression of the Manila–Acapulco galleon route. The decision came amid major political and military turmoil affecting Spain and its empire. It marked an official step toward ending a long-running system that had connected Asian and American markets through New Spain.
In 1814, with the Peninsular War ended, King Ferdinand VII ratified the dissolution of the Manila–Acapulco galleon system. This confirmation helped turn a decree into a durable policy change. It also reflected Spain’s shifting priorities and reduced ability to sustain the old trade framework in the face of imperial crises.
In 1815, the Manila–Acapulco galleon trade ended, closing a 250-year Pacific corridor between Manila and Acapulco. The ending was tied to upheaval in New Spain during the Mexican War of Independence, which disrupted the route’s American anchor. With the galleons gone, Spain’s Pacific empire had to adjust to a new political and commercial reality.
