In mid-1847, Yucatán authorities uncovered a Maya-led plot and moved quickly to stop it. Manuel Antonio Ay, a local Maya leader (batab), was arrested in Valladolid and executed by hanging on July 26, 1847. His death helped trigger wider uprisings across eastern Yucatán.
On July 18, 1847, Maya communities gathered at the Columpich hacienda (linked to Jacinto Pat) to prepare rebellion against taxes and forced labor demands. Shortly after, Cecilio Chi attacked Tepich on July 30, 1847, an escalation widely treated as the start of the Caste War’s open fighting. These early actions set off a long, region-wide conflict on the Yucatán Peninsula.
As fighting spread, Maya forces took major towns in eastern Yucatán, including Valladolid, a key regional center. The capture and sacking of Valladolid became one of the conflict’s most visible early shocks and contributed to panic and displacement among non-Maya residents. It also showed that the rebellion had moved beyond isolated attacks into a major war.
In April 1848, Jacinto Pat signed the Treaty of Tzucacab with the Yucatán government. The agreement reduced some burdens on Maya communities (including certain church fees) and sought to bring Pat into a formal leadership role under negotiated terms. Cecilio Chi rejected the treaty and continued fighting, deepening divisions among the Maya leadership.
Cecilio Chi, a leading pro-war Maya commander, died on December 13, 1848. Accounts differ on whether he was killed in battle or assassinated, but his death removed a central figure who opposed compromise. Even so, the conflict continued, shifting toward new leaders and new centers of resistance.
In April 1849, the town of Tihosuco was besieged and saw a major battle that ended in a criollo (non-indigenous elite) victory. The defeat discouraged some Maya forces and pushed more fighters to retreat into the jungle, changing the war’s geography and tactics. Over time, repeated attacks and counterattacks left many communities damaged or abandoned.
After Chi’s death, tensions among rebel leaders intensified, especially over Pat’s decision to negotiate. On September 8, 1849, Jacinto Pat was assassinated at Holchén by José Venancio Pec, who viewed him as a traitor. Pat’s death further shifted Maya resistance toward the jungle frontier and toward new religious-political structures.
In 1850, independent Maya groups founded Noj Kaaj Santa Cruz Báalam Naj (often called Chan Santa Cruz), which became the best-known center of armed and political resistance. The town housed the Talking Cross (Cruz Parlante), a sacred symbol that supported the movement’s authority and cohesion. Chan Santa Cruz helped sustain the conflict for decades by providing a capital-like base in the eastern forests.
In 1866, Tihosuco faced another major siege during a period when the war continued in cycles of raids, sieges, and reprisals. The Yucatán army defended the town, and damage to local buildings—especially the church—remained a visible reminder of the conflict. The repeated sieges showed that the war had become a long struggle rather than a single uprising.
In 1893, Britain and Mexico signed the Mariscal–Spencer Treaty, which recognized Mexico’s sovereignty over the disputed area and formalized the border with British Honduras (Belize). A key effect was tightening the border against trade that had supplied Chan Santa Cruz with weapons and gunpowder through Belize. This diplomatic shift weakened the independent Maya state’s ability to continue large-scale warfare.
In 1901, Mexican federal forces under General Ignacio Bravo entered Chan Santa Cruz and held it with a permanent garrison. This ended the town’s role as an independent Maya capital and allowed the army to push into surrounding villages. Bravo later reported the conflict’s end to authorities, marking a decisive turning point toward federal control of the region.
After the fall of Chan Santa Cruz, Mexico reorganized the region to strengthen control and administration. A federal territory—Quintana Roo—was created by presidential decree in late 1902, with Santa Cruz de Bravo (the renamed Chan Santa Cruz) serving as the capital. The new territory’s creation was explicitly tied to “pacifying” the area after decades of Caste War fighting.
