Electric-utility operators created the National Electric Light Association (NELA) to share operating practices and promote the growing industry. As electric systems spread, this kind of coordination helped normalize technical and business practices. It also gave utilities a collective voice as electricity became important to factories and city growth.
General Electric (GE) formed when Edison General Electric and Thomson-Houston merged. The combined company helped standardize and mass-produce electrical equipment, from generators to motors and lighting. For American industry, this meant more available hardware and faster diffusion of electrified factory machinery.
Samuel Insull became president of Chicago Edison, later part of Commonwealth Edison. He pushed a strategy of building large, efficient generating stations and expanding service over a wide territory under regulation. That approach encouraged bigger power systems that could serve dense industrial loads more reliably and cheaply.
The Niagara Falls project (Niagara Power Station No. 1 / Adams power development) began operating, demonstrating large hydroelectric generation. It showed that big plants could produce power at industrial scale, not just for local lighting. These projects helped validate long-distance power supply for cities and manufacturing centers.
Electricity generated at Niagara Falls was transmitted to Buffalo, proving that power could travel far enough to serve major urban and industrial customers. This strengthened the case for alternating-current (AC) systems and regional networks. Reliable transmission made it easier for factories to buy electricity instead of generating it on-site.
The first National Electrical Code (NEC) was published, giving standardized rules for safe wiring and equipment. Clear safety expectations reduced fire risk and uncertainty for builders, insurers, and manufacturers. As more factories electrified, shared safety standards helped electrical installations scale more quickly.
Ford began building its Highland Park plant, designed as a modern factory with extensive electric lighting and power. Electrically driven machines and better lighting supported more flexible layouts than older, belt-driven “line shaft” factories. The plant became a high-profile example of what electrified production could look like.
Ford shifted vehicle production to the Highland Park facility, expanding a factory built around abundant power and light. The site’s scale and design helped Ford keep reorganizing work as methods changed. This mattered because electrification made production spaces easier to rearrange for efficiency.

Congress passed the Federal Water Power Act (later known as the Federal Power Act), creating a federal licensing framework for hydropower projects. This aimed to coordinate development on waterways used for electricity generation. The law reflected how important large-scale electricity supply had become to industry and regional growth.
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was created as a federal corporation to build dams and provide electricity, along with flood control and navigation improvements. TVA’s low-cost power aimed to spur economic development, including industrial growth, in a large multi-state region. It became a major model for public power and regional planning.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) by executive order to expand electric service outside cities. While focused on farms and small communities, it also supported broader demand for electricity and equipment manufacturing. It marked a shift toward federal involvement in building electric infrastructure.
Congress passed the Rural Electrification Act, providing federal loans to build distribution systems in rural areas. This accelerated the expansion of electric service and increased national electricity demand, supporting more generation and equipment production. Although the act came after the main 1880–1930 industrial electrification surge, it helped complete the broader infrastructure transition that industrial growth depended on.
