Birmingham, Alabama was founded in 1871 at a planned railroad crossing, with promoters aiming to build an industrial center near coal, iron ore, and limestone resources. In the late 1800s, the city became a symbol of the “New South” idea that the region could expand beyond agriculture into iron, steel, and manufacturing.
In 1877, federal troops were withdrawn from the last former Confederate states still under military oversight, a shift many historians treat as the practical end of Reconstruction. This political change helped southern Democratic “Redeemer” governments gain control, shaping labor laws, public spending, and the business climate during the region’s early push toward industrial growth.
From October through December 1881, Atlanta held a major exposition focused on cotton production and related technology. Events like this were used to market the South as a place for investment and industrial development, linking agriculture to manufacturing and rail transport.
In a widely discussed 1886 speech in New York City, Atlanta editor Henry W. Grady argued that the South should pursue diversified industry alongside agriculture. The “New South” message helped popularize industrialization goals, even as the region remained deeply shaped by racial inequality and rural poverty.
In 1890, the American Tobacco Company was incorporated under the leadership of James B. Duke, becoming a large-scale manufacturer with national reach. Tobacco manufacturing and marketing showed how some southern industries could grow beyond local markets by using new machinery, aggressive advertising, and consolidation.
In 1890, Mississippi held a constitutional convention that adopted mechanisms such as poll taxes and literacy tests that disfranchised many Black Mississippians (and also many poor White voters). These political changes mattered economically because they weakened political competition and reduced the power of many workers and farmers to shape public policy.
Around 1892, the boll weevil entered the United States near Brownsville, Texas and began spreading across cotton-growing regions. Because much of the South’s economy and credit system depended on cotton, the pest’s advance created pressure for crop diversification and new types of work beyond plantation-style cotton farming.
Atlanta’s Cotton States and International Exposition ran in late 1895 at Piedmont Park and drew large crowds. It promoted the South’s manufacturing, mineral resources, and trade ambitions, while also reflecting the era’s segregated institutions (including a separate “Negro Building”).
On May 18, 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Louisiana’s segregation law, supporting the “separate but equal” doctrine. This ruling helped entrench Jim Crow segregation across the South, shaping who had access to education, transportation, and public services that affected long-term workforce development and industrial opportunity.
In 1905, Southern Power Company (a predecessor of Duke Power and later Duke Energy) was incorporated, aiming to generate and transmit electricity—especially to industrial customers like textile mills. Expanding reliable electric power supported larger factories, longer operating hours, and more modern industrial equipment in parts of the South.
The Great Southern Lumber Company was chartered in 1902 and developed Bogalusa, Louisiana as a company town; its large sawmill began operating in 1908. Timber, rail spurs, and company-town labor systems linked southern natural resources to industrial-scale production and national markets.
By 1910–1916, the boll weevil spread through Alabama, damaging cotton yields and destabilizing tenant farming and sharecropping systems. The shock pushed some farmers toward new crops and drove many people to leave rural areas, increasing migration to southern cities and out of the region.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta opened on November 16, 1914, serving a district that included much of the Southeast. Early efforts included stabilizing credit tied to the cotton economy and reducing reliance on distant financial centers, which influenced how businesses and banks financed growth.
On July 11, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Aid Road Act, the first major federal highway funding law. Better roads reduced transport costs for farm goods and factory products, helping southern towns connect more efficiently to regional and national markets.
In early 1927, catastrophic flooding hit the lower Mississippi Valley, especially Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The disaster disrupted agriculture and transportation in a major cotton region and contributed to longer-term changes in labor movement, land use, and public demands for infrastructure and flood control.
On June 17, 1930, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act was signed into law, raising U.S. import duties and triggering retaliatory tariffs abroad. Coming as the Great Depression deepened, shrinking global trade hurt export-dependent sectors, adding pressure to southern agriculture and industry and marking a turning point toward a harsher interwar economy.
