Lieutenant John Bowen led a small party to anchor and begin a British settlement at Risdon Cove on the Derwent River. The outpost was intended to secure the area for Britain and discourage rival European powers. This marked the start of continuous British colonization in what became Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania).
Lieutenant-Colonel David Collins arrived and quickly decided Risdon Cove lacked reliable fresh water. He relocated the main settlement across the river to Sullivans Cove, creating the base that grew into Hobart. This move shifted the colony’s center to a more practical port and supply location.
A confrontation at the early Risdon Cove settlement led to Aboriginal Tasmanians being shot and killed by colonial forces. Events like this became part of a wider pattern of frontier violence and fear. The incident helped harden attitudes on both sides and foreshadowed escalating conflict over land and resources.
Lieutenant-Colonel William Paterson led a party to establish a northern outpost at Port Dalrymple (near today’s George Town). The settlement extended British control beyond the Derwent region and supported later expansion into the island’s north. It also brought new points of contact and tension with Aboriginal communities.
The Hobart Town Gazette began publication, helping connect officials, settlers, and businesses through printed notices and news. Newspapers became important for public debate, trade, and political organizing in the colony. Over time, press activity also reflected growing demands for local rights and accountability.
A remote punishment settlement was established at Macquarie Harbour on Sarah Island. It was designed for hard labor and strict control, and it gained a reputation for brutal conditions. This marked a shift toward harsher “secondary punishment” for convicts who reoffended in the colony.
An Order in Council formally separated Van Diemen’s Land from New South Wales and established its own nominated Legislative Council. This changed the colony’s governance by making local administration more independent from Sydney. The new political structure shaped land policy, policing, and the convict system during rapid expansion.
Governor George Arthur issued the Proclamation of Demarcation, aiming to separate colonists and Aboriginal Tasmanians by defining zones and enforcing boundaries. Although framed as protection, it effectively supported settler access to desirable land. The policy reflected how colonial law increasingly managed conflict through restriction and removal.
Port Arthur began as a government timber station and soon became a key penal site for “secondary offenders” (convicts punished again for new offences). Its isolation and security made it central to the colony’s discipline system. The settlement also depended on extensive land and resource control in the surrounding region.
In October 1830, thousands of settlers, soldiers, police, and convicts formed a moving human chain to push Aboriginal people out of the settled districts. The campaign captured very few people directly, but it intensified displacement and fear. It became one of the most well-known episodes of the frontier conflict later called the Black War.
After years of escalating violence, martial law—used to support military action and settler security—was revoked in early 1832. This signaled an official shift away from open warfare in the settled districts. However, many Aboriginal survivors were already being pressured or persuaded into removal from their homelands.
Wybalenna began operating as an Aboriginal establishment on Flinders Island to hold and manage forcibly exiled Aboriginal Tasmanians. The site became associated with high death rates, disease, and enforced cultural disruption. Its creation marked a turning point from frontier warfare toward confinement and centralized control.
The ship St Vincent arrived in Hobart, recognized as the final convict transport to Van Diemen’s Land. Ending transportation changed the colony’s labor system and politics, as free settlers and reformers pushed to reduce the “convict stain.” This closing step helped set the stage for later moves toward self-government and a new colonial identity.
