After being exiled without trial to the Chatham Islands (Wharekauri), Te Kooti led an uprising among the prisoners and seized the schooner Rifleman. The escape brought Te Kooti and his followers back to the East Coast and set the immediate conditions for a new conflict. It also helped spread his emerging Ringatū faith among the returning exiles.
Te Kooti and the whakarau (exiles) landed back on the North Island near Whareongaonga, close to Poverty Bay. Efforts to negotiate safe passage failed, and government-aligned forces began pursuing the group inland. This early pursuit pushed the conflict toward armed clashes rather than a peaceful settlement.
Government militia pursuing Te Kooti were ambushed near Paparatu. The attackers captured arms, ammunition, supplies, and horses—resources that helped Te Kooti’s band sustain a mobile guerrilla campaign. The fight marked a shift from flight and pursuit to organized armed resistance.
A skirmish occurred at Ruakituri as government forces and kūpapa (Māori allied with the government) continued tracking Te Kooti inland. The engagement was part of a fast-moving early campaign in difficult bush terrain. It showed how quickly the conflict spread beyond Poverty Bay into wider districts.
Te Kooti led a night attack on Matawhero in Poverty Bay, killing around 60 people, including settlers and local Māori. The raid was widely understood at the time as utu (revenge) tied to Te Kooti’s exile and local political conflicts. It shocked the colony and triggered a much larger, more determined government pursuit.
Te Kooti’s forces were surrounded at Ngātapa pā and besieged for several days. Te Kooti escaped during a breakout, but many of his followers were captured; numerous prisoners were executed afterward. The siege became a decisive turning point, severely reducing Te Kooti’s fighting strength while hardening attitudes on both sides.
Te Kooti’s band attacked communities in the Mohaka area, killing both European settlers and Māori considered loyal to the government. Contemporary reports describe coordinated attacks and heavy civilian losses. The raids extended fear well beyond Poverty Bay and reinforced the government’s resolve to keep pursuing Te Kooti into remote country.
At Te Pōrere, Te Kooti fought from prepared earthworks but was defeated by Armed Constabulary and kūpapa forces. The battle is often described as the last major engagement of the New Zealand Wars. Afterward, Te Kooti relied even more on evasion, small raids, and movement through rugged interior regions.
Colonial and allied Māori forces took Tapapa, a position associated with Te Kooti’s movements into the Waikato and central North Island. The action reflected the campaign’s shift into a long pursuit across wide areas rather than fighting in one district. Even when pressed, Te Kooti repeatedly avoided capture and re-entered the bush.
A government-aligned force captured Te Kooti’s position at Maraetahi in the Urewera country, killing and capturing members of his group. Te Kooti again escaped with a small number of followers, demonstrating the continuing pattern: tactical losses but strategic survival through mobility. The fighting also increased pressure on communities sheltering him.
By late 1871, government-aligned forces increasingly treated Te Kooti as a diminishing military threat but continued searching for him. NZ History notes that key kūpapa leaders withdrew from Te Urewera as wider fighting wound down, leaving Te Kooti with fewer options and supporters. This stage was less about major battles and more about attrition and isolation.
Te Kooti reached Arowhena in the King Country and was granted sanctuary by the Māori King, Tāwhiao. This refuge effectively ended the main phase of armed pursuit that had followed the Poverty Bay campaign and later guerrilla operations. From this point, Te Kooti’s influence continued more through his Ringatū religion and political legacy than through warfare.
